Saetan almost didn't go into the room where the girls were sitting with Smoke and discussing spells and work to do in the gardens. It wasn't that the gardens needed any work done, mind you. Just like all witches and Queens, they needed to be able to walk among the land and feel it soothing them and comforting

"--- that are not Demon Dead," he finished. "This isn't permanent, and you're not going alone." He looked at Karla and then at Smoke.

"Why are you doing this?" Jaenelle demanded in a hurt voice. "What have I done?"
Saetan felt his heart break at the pain in his daughter's voice and the hurt shining in her eyes. He knew she was thinking that she had done something wrong and that was why he was sending her away. Again, he wanted to get his hands on her blood relatives and make them pay for every pain that they had ever caused Jaenelle.
"Witch-child," he said softly, going to her and sinking to one knee. "Lady, I'm not doing this because of anything you have done. You're my daughter and I love you very much. That will never change."
