It's a story from Norse mythology. The goddess Friga proclaimed the mistletoe to be sacred after her son Baldur died from being stabbed by a spear of mistletoe but was resurrected again. Friga said that the plant would have to bring forth love instead of hatred now and so everyone celebrates Baldur's resurrection by kissing under a mistletoe.
