Application:

Name: Carlin
Age: 17
Location: Grosse Pointe, MI

How do you feel about:

religion: I am Roman Catholic, even though the rest of my family is Episcopal (it's a long story...). I'm not an extremely active Catholic, but I feel strong in my beliefs. I don't try and convert others, however. Everyone has the right to believe in whatever they want.

politics: The state of politics right now is disgraceful. It's all favors and lies, but I try and keep up on it as best as I can. I'll be able to vote next year, and I need to be able to vote intelligently.

drugs: They are not my thing. I don't like the idea of putting something in my body, when I can't be sure of the consequences. I never want to feel as if I'm not in control.

alcohol: I drink occassionally, but never excessively. I just really like the taste of Cosmos; I never drink to get drunk.

music: I love music, and am not picky about what I listen to. My parents are big music fans, and I grew up listening to a lot of 70s classic rock. The Eagles are one of my all time favorite bands- their Hell Freezes Over tour was my very first concert.

yourself: I love myself. I'll admit that every now and then I wish I could change some little trivial thing about myself (e.g.: My self confidence, my complexion, my ability to concentrate, etc.), but in general, I'm happy with who I am, and with what I have going for me.

What are two things that aggravate you the most and why? I really hate people who don't know what they're talking about. I don't mind arguing with people who are well informed, and have evidence to support their claims; in fact, I really respect someone who can argue logically, even if I don't agree with them. But if someone can't defend their position, yet still refuses to look at any other point of view, it really bothers me.

Also, and this may seem trivial to some people, but it aggravates me to no end; I can't stand it when your 'friends' insult your family members. If I am complaining about my little sister's inability to be on time for anything, I don't expect anyone else to start complaining about my sister. It's allowable to rag on your own family, but not anyone elses!

What makes you think that you are worthy of this community? I consider myself an intelligent, talented individual. I'm generally high-spirited, and up for a challenge :)

Trivial
favorite movie? The Shawshank Redemption. I don't want to give anything away to anyone who hasn't seen it but, I'll just say that I love the way that everything works out in the end. Everyone gets exactly what was coming to them.

book? Pride and Prejudice is absolutely my favorite book. Jane Austen is a fantastic author, especially considering the oppression she faced while writing her novels. The little things in the book- the fact that all the estates have names (e.g.: Pemberley, Longbourne, Rosings), and that everyone is referred to as Mr. or Miss, never by their first names- endear the book to me and make me wish I lived in a time when such pleasantries were still adhered to. Also, I'm a sucker for happy endings, and P&P ended just as it ought to.

artist or band? Blue Rodeo! They're a Canadian band that my mom discovered on the radio (we live just across the Detroit River from Canada, so we get their radio stations) about 10 years ago, and I just adore them. They have extremely ecclectic music- no one song sounds like any other. I saw them in concert last April and was blown away.

This is my dad and I at my godmother's wedding.

I'm on the far right with some friends at the Junior Assembly Christmas Dance.

I'm on the far right with some girls from my Outward Bound trip.

My little sister snapped a picture while I was starting up the car.

I'm in a bog, holding onto a canoe while on an Outward Bound expedition in Manitoba.
