More colonists had arrived since they landed on the Trinity moons almost a year earlier. It was cold and snow had started to fall when Todd carried the tree back on one shoulder. Nathan clung to his neck with a grin. The boy still didn’t speak but Todd didn’t mind. He was silent too.
Todd set the boy down inside the door. He ran in with the other children. Todd watched for a moment before he took the tree into the room where Sandra was waiting. He stopped in the door way watching her tend the fire. She still caught him sometimes. It was a feeling he didn’t understand. The feeling he had when he saw her in soft light still brought overwhelming fear. He knew fear and he didn’t shy away from it but there was something about her.
“Sir?” Todd announced his presence. Sandra looked up from her work.
“Bring it here. I have the stand you made over here.” She stood and walked over toward the far wall. Todd joined her. He liked to work. It wasn’t war but it gave him something to do, something he could do. He stood the tree in place while she tightened the base. His eyes were following the arch of her back and the mass of blond hair she kept brushing out of the way.
“Almost done.” She shifted and then crawled from beneath it. “There. Let it go.”
Todd let go of the tree and it stood on its own. Sandra stood back and nodded approvingly. Todd understood approval and often sought it out. It was one of the few human interactions that he did understand that didn’t involve injury.
“Do you need anything else, sir?” Todd stood at attention. Despite Sandra’s best effort he couldn’t relax and stand as others did.
“Could you hang something for me?” Sandra held out a bunch of tied twigs or branches. Todd wasn’t sure what they were. He didn’t recognize the plant at all. “Over the door.”
He took the bunch as gently as he could. Todd had spent a lot of time learning to hold other people’s belongings gently. With the mass of bound leaves in one hand Todd retrieved the hammer and hung the branches. They refused to stay at first. They were too heavy for the wire. Todd didn’t need instruction on what to do. A stronger piece of wire was found and he got the bunch to stay over the door. Todd though it looked squished and attempted to straighten it.
“Thank you.”
Todd turned on her voice to see Sandra smiling. She looked up at the bunch and it caused him to as well. He was still wondering what kind of plant it was and why pieces of it were hung over the door. He wanted to know what it was and why. Sandra was his source of answers and he brought his attention to her. She was smiling and her cheeks had flushed. It didn’t seem too warm in the room. Sandra seemed nervous about something. Todd glanced around not noticing anything out of the ordinary.
In a brief second Sandra stood on her toes and pressed her lips to his before the flush worsened. Todd knew what a kiss was in a vague sense. Why she’d done it to him he couldn’t guess. Though now he understood the flush he felt hot all over. Todd backed away and bumped into the door frame.
Sandra pointed up at the plant. “You’re standing under the mistletoe.”
Todd looked up at the plant. “Why?”
Todd touched his lips where hers had. That plant made people kiss you or meant that people would kiss you. Todd backed away farther.
“It’s alright Todd.” Sandra stepped closer and held his wrist. He let her do that after all the time they spent together. Todd pulled away and walked off. There was a hiding place he’d built not far from the house. He sat there in the dark terrified of what had happened. Every now and then he would see someone walk through the doorway and kiss. Todd tried to understand but he couldn’t. All he could assume is it was a custom of the colonists. He wanted to fit in. After the last time he was afraid they might tell him to leave again.
