Being unemployed, I need to find things to do. This week, I got to download the LotR Online Beta. After playing around, and killing some stuff, I realized the true fun of this game: sightseeing. Why kill bears when you can see shit from the books and movies?
Here are some of the pics of the first leg of my journey...
I decided to start where all good journeys begin: Bag End. Those two hobbits behind me are the Sackville-Baggins's, and yes, they do have quests. You can go inside Bag End, but it is just a house, nothing really special in there (like a ring or anything.) On a side note, the timing of the game is just after the Hobbits left for Rivendell, so you will see things along the way.
While on my journey, I encountered the house that Frodo bought after he left Bag End (like he did in the books), so that confirms my theory that this will follow the books not the movies. Sorry, no pic of that house, but as soon as I saw it I knew what it was.
I continued my journey outside the Shire, and tried to get to Tom Bombadill's House. That proved to be impossible (the Old Woods are aggro heaven, so, that is a no go.) So, I gave up and went to Bree-Town. There I found...
This was really cool, just like it should be. It was pretty much the biggest inn I have seen in the game, a really massive space. Of course, Butterbur was there, but, more importantly, I found this in one of the rooms....
He is a major quest giver (obviously), but, I was not interested in the quests. I needed to get to Rivendell! So, I left the Prancing Pony, and made it through Bree-Town (which is a lot bigger than I would have thought.) Seeing as how I did a lot of travel, I had to get a good place to bed down for the night, so I figured this would be a good spot...
Weathertop. Not quite as imposing without the Ring Wraiths there, but oh well, it still made a good spot to log for the night. Tomorrow I am gonna try to run to Rivendell, but I am so far out there (everything is like 6 levels above me lol), I might not make it. Oh well, at least I am seeing the game.
As for my opinions of the game, overall, it is ok. The sightseeing thing is cool, but I am not completely sold on the game. They offer a bajillion quests, but you can fill up your quest log which is stupid. Combat is really simple, and it seems like a game that will have a lot of solo-leveling. It also seems like a 'hey, I have 20 minutes, I can play some LotR' type thing (though this run took me about an hour and a half when you take out the time I took trying to get to Bombadill's house.
Would I buy it? Nah, it ain't for me. Is it fun for a lil change? Yeah. But, I would not pay for it.
