Dear Friends:
This coming weekend, for the third time in the history of the world, activist street bands from communities all over the country and beyond will converge in Davis Square to make uplifting, improvisational street music, in celebration of our common musical impulse to be whoever we want to be. There'll be horns and drums of every shape and sound, the craziest d-i-y costumes you can imagine, and everyone will be singing, smiling, dancing, clapping and dreaming of a world where everyone is free and anything can happen. For that moment, it will be the coolest, hottest, most be beautiful spot on our planet.
I know I said this last year, but it's true again: this one's gonna be the best HONK! yet. The beloved people's band from the streets of Rome, Titubanda, will be here the whole weekend to play their Italian hearts out, along with their Brooklyn hosts, the incomparable Hungry March Band. The Original Big Seven Social Aid & Pleasure Club returns from NOLA's Seventh Ward, bigger and better than ever, and they'll be joined by their new friends (and our old friends), San Francisco's Brass Liberation Orchestra. The wildly popular March Fourth Marching Band from Portland, Oregon, will be back again, and so will the unforgettable Rude Mechanical Orchestra. Chicago's Environmental Encroachment returns with more bunnies than ever, and New York City's Himalayas are coming back too. So are our Montreal friends, the Chaotic Insurrection Ensemble, and our Vermont friends, the Bread & Puppet Circus Band. And for the first time, we're delighted to include Atlanta's Seed & Feed Marching Abominable, Durham's Scene Of The Crime Rovers, Minneapolis's Brass Messengers, New York's TriBattery Pops, Oakland's Loyd Family Players, and Seattle's Yellow Hat Band. Add in local favorites What Cheer? Brigade, Leftist Marching Band, Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band, AfroBrazil, Junkanoo Jumpers, as well as our very own Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band, and you have the makings of a kick-ass party that can't be stopped, can't be beat, can't be missed.
It all begins Friday afternoon, Oct 10, with band workshops and a "Politics and Festival" symposium at Tufts University (where they are also growing a HONK! U. marching band to perform over the weekend). Then all day Saturday, Oct 11, after 11:30 am opening ceremonies in 7 Hills Park, two dozen bands will be playing - 6 at a time - all over Davis Square, from noon until 9 pm - all outdoors, all free, all ages. Then, starting at noon on Sunday Oct 12, brass bands and drum ensembles, puppeteers and cyclists, tumblers and hula hoopers, roller skaters and baby strollers, flag wavers and peace marchers and community organizers, will all be parading together down Mass Ave to "Reclaim the Streets for Horns, Bikes and Feet," led by Harvard Square's own Click & Clack (in a pedicab!). There'll be additional honk band performances at the Oktoberfest celebration, and then a final blow-out concert Sunday night at Dilboy Hall, featuring all the participating bands. And as if that weren't enough, the party continues in Providence on Columbus Day Monday, as "Brass Bands Conquer the New World" at AS220 and The Black Repertory Theater. For the whole schedule and all the juicy details, visit
http://honkfest.org We couldn't possibly do this alone, and we've been blessed with very generous and enthusiastic support from local residents and businesses, our friends and neighbors. If you would like to help out - either volunteer some time during our festival, or offer your home to some of our visiting musicians, or contribute money to help us offset our expenses - please reply to this message, or go to the Help Us page on our website.
Two more favors to ask. We want to share our message of joyous, musical community activism as far and wide as possible; so please tell a friend, and bring your camera.
See y'all there!
Kevin
P.S. Wanna play with us? This year, for the first time, we will be hosting two open bands for people to join. First, folks at Tufts University are putting together a HONK U. marching band open to anyone in the community, with rehearsals all this week (see schedule for details). And we are also featuring an open pick-up band for rogue "bandits" who want to bring a horn or a drum and make impromptu music with friends. The band will rehearse selections from our new HONK! book of tunes on Saturday 3-4 pm in the park at the corner of Grove Street and Highland Ave. in Davis Square, and will then perform in the HONK! Parade on Sunday afternoon. Should be loads of fun.
