I think I know sort of what I want to do with my life

Apr 03, 2006 13:11

I am going to become a sex therapist and liscensed psychologist specializing in physically disabled people.
Sexuality is something that has been denied to this population, and it is something I am going to work to give back.
I am still going to take some journalism classes though, so I could do free lance stuff.

mmmm that's great! you should look into an MSW program :) after getting an MSW you can do clinical work and become a therapist.

yeah ive googled social work alot lately, i don't really know the differences between being a social worker and a psychologist... but for some reason I would rather be a social worker. However, I do want to become a sex therapist.... so if I could do that with a social work degree that would be great.

social work is a masters in which you understand clinical and community practice through a larger lense. we don't just look at the psyche and individual processes. we look at that in clinical work, but the basis for social work is understanding larger societal oppressions and how they interact. we use this as a basis for learning how to do intervention work, therapy and etc...i would recommend that you look into an MSW if you want to work with handicapped individuals. MSWs focus a lot on oppressed groups of people and how to treat them on a personal level and a more community level.

so, in short...the MSW provides the community and the personal where the psychology provides just the personal approach. I prefer the both and i'd imagine you do too.

Not all of it, but some of it, most likely. My parents and big brother are coming over, so I'll probably only go to a few workshops.

Re: I've thought quite a bit about the subject, actually... tofuwink April 4 2006, 04:54:04 UTC
I agree with you.
Ideally I am hoping to work with disabled adolescents and young adults, and teach them that they do have a sexuality, a right to be sexual, and how to use it. This would be through various workshops on confidence, the body, and accessible techniques they can use.
I have found that when a person is born with a disability their sexuality is kind of taken from them, and you have to fight to get it back, and it can be a very painful fight so I am just hoping to lessen the load. I hope through sex positive work shops, these people can go out with a new confidence and have more willing partners, because i think confidence has a big part to do with it.
In Italy, there is this advocacy website and it publishes racy calenders featuring women in wheel chairs, i think that is really awesome also and I would not mind starting something like that eithier... kind of like a "see we are sexy and all up in your face" statement.
On another note, how are you??
