It wasn’t until Lupin’s eighth visit to the grave that Draco worked up the nerve to approach him. He made a point of staying in view of the foe-glass embedded in the headstone, even though he realised the wind had already relayed his scent to Lupin. The other man’s wand dangled from his hand at an angle that seemed almost negligent, but Draco had seen for himself the terrible speed with which Lupin could transform from mild-mannered mentor to avenging angel: there hadn’t been the slightest hesitation in Lupin’s stance when he cut down Lucius Malfoy in front of his son’s eyes.
“About time you showed yourself,” Lupin said, not turning around.
“I thought you’d prefer to be alone with him,” Draco said, motioning to the grave.
Lupin let out a harsh laugh, not bothering to mask his bitterness. “Severus and I never had what we wanted when he was alive. Why should that change now?”
Draco shut his eyes, conscious of the sting of the wind as he said, “No one would condemn you if you killed me. What in the world is stopping you?”
“He loved you,” Lupin said. “The least I can do is to understand that.”
