BSG 3.05 - Collaborators
I know, I know, there's been some kerfuffle about the numbering system, but I started it this way so I'm just going to keep on going.
When I got home from work the episode was already 6 minutes in, and even though Jacob wanted me to watch it right then, I decided to wait for the midnight showing so I could see it in its entirety. I'm glad I waited, because I would have missed the whole scene with Jammer.
Of course, as it was supposed to, this scene bothered me. I did not think Jammer deserved to die. Punishment, yes, but death, not so sure... especially because he showed remorse. He was an idiot and he was weak but I don't think he was evil. Saving Cally and being sorry doesn't make it all right again, but surely they could have stuck him in one of those cylon jail cells? I don't know.
Anders rocks for leaving The Circle. I was a little surprised when he left that Chief didn't leave too, but perhaps Chief recognized that if he left, they'd just replace him with someone who'd vote guilty without even thinking about it.
Like Kara. Oh, Kara. I do not like you at all today. OUT OF CONTROL. She gets points for being honest about just wanting someone to die to make herself feel better, but WTF? That's got to be the most selfish thing I've ever heard. I really hated her when she was screaming at Gaeta to beg. Gaeta wasn't the one who had her locked in that bizarre two-story loft, but she doesn't seem to care. Also, she still has both her eyes, so what's she complaining about? Okay, seriously, I get that she has issues, like anyone would after what she's been through. It doesn't make me hate her any less.
Frankly, I'm glad Anders kind of told her he's not going to take her bullshit anymore. Other people have talked more coherently than I could about Kara's reasoning for telling Anders to get lost, but not why Anders didn't put up a fight. I get his actions more than I get hers. He's just fed up. Kara's not the only one who had a shitty four months. Anders was down there too, he saw people die, and he did his best, dammit. He understands that killing people to make up for it isn't actually going to fix anything, and he also sees that his wife can't or won't understand that. This is going to be a rough time for all of them, and if she wants to fight through it by herself, then so be it.
This episode had so much of what I love about BSG: there is no right answer. Kara and Tigh are clearly out of control, but can you blame them? They've suffered more than Adama or anyone who didn't spend 4 months in detention can know. But at the same time, should we be letting them make important decisions when their judgment has been so clearly distorted by their experiences? I am of the opinion that Tigh should not be XO anymore. But that's not right either. "Sorry, you were tortured for so long that we're going to have to fire you." Mmm ambiguity.
Also, I loved loved LOVED Zarek's little speech at the end where he discloses that he authorized The Circle. He was so right and so wrong at the same time. Sure, public trials would destroy the fleet and get nothing accomplished. It's true. But it's not right to pick six people, six people who have foggy morals and, like Tigh and Laden Radim (whose actual name in the show I haven't caught yet), people who are incredibly emotionally invested, decide the fates of any so-called collaborators.
Roslin and Zarek, your little presidential switch-a-roo is a little shady, but I'm willing to accept it for the sake of the status quo. Also, I think Zarek was pleasantly surprised when Roslin offered him the vice presidency. When he said he wanted to be included, I think he was maybe aiming for something a little lower. I'm glad he'll be around, because he knows how to get things done.
I thought it was sweet that after Roslin's speech, Adama was the first one to start clapping. But doesn't anyone (such as the press) find this a little disturbing? I think it could be a little dangerous for Adama and Roslin to be so obviously in each other's pocket. It smells a bit like dictatorship.
Speaking of Adama, I am not as surprised at his lack of support for Lee as everyone else appears to be. This is our old dysfunctional Adama relationship. Papadama can express his feelings for Lee when he's not there, but when he is around he's all gruff and demeaning. That's how it's always been. That's what makes Lee work so hard to please his dad. It's just how their relationship works. Lee would be a completely different person if he had unconditional acceptance from Bill.
Aaaand finally... Gaeta. I will be the first to admit I wasn't that crazy about Gaeta in previous seasons, but I totally love him this season. This episode really showcased his strength, in that he pretty much laid down and took all the shit everyone was giving him without whining or trying to vindicate himself. I loved that he wouldn't beg when Kara hit him. And, as much as I wanted to scream at him to just tell them he was the source, I kind of loved that he wouldn't repeat himself. I do think it was a little anticlimactic, because you could totally see this was where the episode was going from the beginning, but I think it was well-executed.
In conclusion, yay!
ETA:ZOMG I forgot about Baltar! How could this have happened? I'm so excited that he's on a Basestar. I knew it was going to happen, but still. I liked that at first he was dreaming that they forgave him only to wake up to what could be considered anyone's worst nightmare. Sure, the background was cheesy, but I can accept it for a throwback to TOS and be over it. I smell some Baltar/Three coming on. I'm glad that Baltar could be used for a little comic relief, because Gaius/Six always used to be the most amusing part of the show back in the old days. "I should have said that first." HAH.
