FIREFLY NIGHT
The summer cicadas sang their seasonal song, pitches changing from high to higher to a tone that pierced the heart and let the heat seep in slowly, languorously. Slippered feet stepped lightly through the browning grass. Three steps, four, five, and they paused.
"We don't have summers like these back home."
Kiku bent and settled himself on the grass next to his guest. The peaceful silence between them was his reply, an acceptance that yes, the seasons were different between their oceans. Arthur turned his head slightly as a night breeze flitted past them and found himself facing Kiku's profile. His host's eyes were half-closed, but they opened wide when Arthur leaned in. He pressed a hand to his cheek and shot a questioning look to the man next to him. Arthur simply pointed to the insect lights dancing over the river and smiled.
"Firefly kisses."
Another smile was Kiku's reply this time as it was his turn to lean in, one hand entwining its fingers with Arthur's, a silent haiku unfolding itself in his chest as the night continued its song of summer.
"The colors of my heart
A thousand fireflies in the grass
They wink, they hide
How sly, how shy"
