[Awakening - Legend] "Loving to Death" [4 of 5]

May 12, 2006 03:39

If I should die this very moment
I wouldn’t fear
For I’ve never known completeness
Like being here

Breath caught, looking up into Ghede's own eyes...

It always stopped his heart to look at those mismatched eyes, the first time he saw them hit him like a freight-train, or at least a sports car.

Was that thunder, storm must be coming...

They were going to have a fight; Gabriel could always tell when they were going to have a fight. Admittedly they’d had a lot of practice so it wasn’t a miracle that he could see the storm clouds gathering. Her full lips always tightened and her nose would wrinkle… just like it was doing now, she’d get these four wrinkles on her brow. He’d jokingly called them his Terrorist Threat Levels once, that’s how he’d gotten that scar on his forehead. The bottle she’d thrown at him had shattered and cut him; she’d lost her anger in a heartbeat and had spent the better part of an hour taking care of him… well before he’d pissed her off again.

Wrapped in the warmth of you
Loving every breath of you
Still in my heart this moment
Or it might burst

He looked at her behind the wheel; the car an extension of her will. Weaving through traffic like it was completely incidental, her focus on anything but the road but still unconsciously keeping them going just a hair below too fast. He loved watching her drive, almost as much as he loved watching her fuck, or sleep, or eat, or breath. He smiled as he looked at her from the passenger side of the car. They'd been together for almost three years; they'd both survived each other and grown closer over that time. He couldn't really fathom a life without her, and the mere thought made him laugh. That of course caused her to grind her teeth; Gabriel shook his head pushing back the long dreads that tumbled to hide his handsome face.

We have attained threat level orange, he thought to himself a hair's breadth before she spoke.

"So where in the fuck are we fuckin' goin' Gabriel fuckin' Legend; I'm fuckin' about fuckin' tired of this fuckin' driving around with your fucktarded as fuckin' directions."

Could we stay right here
'Til the end of time 'til the earth stops turning
Wanna love you 'til the seas run dry
I’ve found the one I’ve waited for

That was his baby, the voice of an angel... and god help him the vocabulary of a dockworker. Twilight responded casually in that easy drawl of his, "If I jus' tell you den it wouldn't be a fuckin' surprise yah? Jus' make get off at dis exit okay?"

Listening to her curse shouldn't have made him happy, but it always did. He loved the way she spoke, he loved the way she held herself, he loved her temper and her intensity, and he loved her. It was really that simple although he rarely spoke the words, whenever he did it would slip free of his lips and she'd smile and her face would light up like Christmas morning. They made an odd couple, but a couple they were for three long and tumultuous years rarely had they spent more than a few weeks apart oddly comfortable living in Boston. So unlike where they'd met and where they'd spent the last two weeks over the holidays; as he turned to gaze out of the window he frowned remember the last time he'd been in New York.

All this time I’ve loved you
And never known your face
All this time I’ve missed you
And searched this human race

How much he'd dreaded coming back to the place he'd died those three years ago, he'd left the Big Apple with a new soul, a new mission, new powers and a new life. And he'd stayed away and buried for three long years, never flinching or thinking of going back save for that one time a year ago when his mentor Azoth had showed him the article in the paper. He'd thought long and hard about tying up those loose ends, the ghosts of his past come back to haunt him. As he looked out over the city Legend thought back to that night, he lay with her nestled in his arms curled up as she was always want to do. He'd stared at the ceiling for hours and it had happened; it was a silly reason really but he still recalled it clearly. He'd started to get up and go to the john and his lover had shifted in her sleep frowning like she did and had gripped him tightly, and had mumbled in her sleep, "Don't go."

And that'd had been it, he couldn't leave her then and he couldn't even think to leave her now, even as she drug him up to visit old friends in the big city. Spending their anniversary here as well the thought of which caused him to chuckle; his laughter of course setting her off again.

"Twilight!? I fuckin' swear to fuckin' Christ almighty if yah don't fuckin' tell me the fuck where I'm supposed to fuckin' go, I'm fuckin' gonna snap your fuckin' cock off an' shove it the fuck up someplace personal yah black fuckin' bastard," ranted his beloved little savior.

Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

He turned from his reflections and faced her, just looking at her caused her to smile, but he cut her off before his expression could spark another salvo of vitriol, "Baby-girl, chill I swear we're here... that's where we goin' right down the way." He pointed through the front of the window and smiled as she squinted down the road.

She looked back at him suspiciously and frowned, "The only fuckin' thing the fuck up that way is the fuckin' Garden, the fuck?" He held out two pieces of paper for her wrapped in ribbon, driving with one hand and taking the gift hesitantly with the other she gazed him suspiciously and as they stopped at the light she looked at the two tickets with a frown, "Fuckin' Knicks tickets, I fuckin' hate the fuckin' Knicks, but...." Her gasp as realization dawned on her made Gabriel's smile grow wider.

"Dat's right Piti-Sovè, dey play your boys de Celtics tonight. I figure courtside tickets two rows behind de bench would warm yah heart a bit," she looked up at him with joy written on her face as he continued, "Happy anniversary Baby-girl."

She'd almost wrecked them coming across the seat kissing him soundly and hugging him tight, and he'd loved every moment of it. As she sped down the road she hummed some random eighties song, happily, she turned to him with an energized grin, "I'm gonna so fuck the fuckin' shit outta you tonight."

He grinned back at her and cocked an eyebrow, "Hurray me! Does dis mean yah gonna let me do dat t'ing wit' de..."

Her blush and laugh cut him off, "Only if they fuckin' win kid, only if they fuckin' win."

Legend turned to face the street and chuckled, "Go Celtics Go!" The sound of her laughter warmed his soul and echoed in the halls of his heart for much of the night.

Wanna stay right here
Until the end of time, ’til the earth stops turning
Gonna love you 'til the seas run dry
I’ve found the one I’ve waited for
The one I’ve waited for

It'd been a good game, a flirtatious drive home, and as they walked down the street from the garage to their friends occasionally they'd duck down an alley to kiss yearningly of one another. The energy between them could, and had, set off alarms throughout the city; the pulse of the Apple was hot even as the cool night air brought a chill to their bones. As they cut through a narrow side street, Gabriel looked at her and smiled at how lucky he'd been to have found a woman as crazy as he was. His laughter was warm and loud in the alley, which made the sickening twist of being cut off from the supernal that much more painful as it occurred.

Blinking uncertainly, he gazed up at Piti-Sovè just in time to see her tackle him as she screamed his name. As his head hit the pavement with a bounce and stars exploded in his eyes the only thought he had was the question, "Was that thunder? Storm must be coming..."

Gabriel's ears were ringing oddly as he tried to sit up only to find her still on him, he muttered her name and shifted his weight under her lifting her up, he blinked as his eyes locked on the twin holes in her chest, her black t-shirt slowly growing more and more moist as her heart's blood seeped out into the night air and oblivion. "B... ba... baby-girl? BABYGIRL?!," his voice broke from the wash of panic and emotion that he felt. His head still pounding from the odd disconnect he felt from his magic, he looked down at her and she smiled at him. Just smiled, peaceful as if a weight had finally been left off her shoulders she reached up to stroke his face and tears slowly leaked from his eyes as she faded.

All I’ve known
All I’ve done
All I’ve felt was leading to this

A voice from the shadows interrupted his mourning and shock like ice water on a hot day, "Yah shoulda stayed fuckin' dead Legend. Too bad about the bitch, she looked like a decent piece o' trim... fuckin' psycho though... like she wanted to die."

Gabriel watched frozen and unblinking as the Italian grease ball stepped out of the shadows hand-cannons cocked, and pointed at his head. Far too fucking pretty to be anyone but the self proclaimed Don Fucking Juan; tacky clothes, smoldering cigarette in his lips, gleaming pistols steady as a rock as he walked closer.

All I’ve known
All I’ve done
All I’ve felt was leading to this

"Yah know Spook, yah jus' earned me five hundred fucking large, those cunts must have really wanted your black ass tah put that much of a bounty on it. That's a shit ton of lapdances, I'd treat yah to one but you're gonna be fuckin' dead," the tall mook walked closer slowly. Gabriel just sat and watched him holding the still form of his beloved in his arms, ears ringing and head spinning. The night was a glow with fever dream intensity and his mind was almost disjointed from what was happening.

As the tall Haitian looked up at the approaching gunman, he noticed a tall ebon skinned form walking in step with his killer. The gaunt features of the figures coal black skin were highlighted by the white shadow of a skull upon its face. As the barrels of the guns raised Twilight's breath caught, looking up into Ghede's eyes.

Wanna stay right here

I’m gonna love you 'til the seas run dry
I’ve found the one I’ve waited for
The one I’ve waited for
The one I’ve waited for

As Gabriel turned to look down at the face that had been the center of his world, a voice spoke, whether the hitman's or Death's is unsure, but the words were like the sound of thunder, "Well, well, well. Ain't life a motherfucker?"

Then came two clicks, then came two booms; and darkness swallowed him into the oblivion's embrace.
