Reita hadn't heard from Ruki in more than a week. He has been trying to call him. It's not as if Reita regularly calls him every day or anything, but lately it seems Ruki has been trying to avoid him even before this. He had asked around and no one appears to know where he is. That just doesn't feel right. Then Reita tried to call Ruki's home phone, which he rarely did. Someone picked up, but it wasn't Ruki. It was Ruki's mother. Surprise. She told Reita she was looking after her son's place while he was in Hawaii. The guy had taken a vacation and told know one about it. Why?

Another week went by. Reita eventually got over the fact that his best friend had went off alone to some place that most would call a paradise. Just when he felt fine with it he saw Ruki the other day walking the intersection in Shibuya. Reita followed him only to discovery it wasn't Ruki. Yesterday it happened again at a guitar shop and it turned out to be a high school kid. The school uniform should had thrown him off but he thought Ruki was trying some new style maybe.

Today Reita realized he might actually need glasses, because he saw Ruki. This time he was at the supermarket. This Ruki-look-alike had on a loose black ski cap, over-sized red plaid button shirt over dark denim skinny jeans, with a long wallet chain hanging off on the side, while wearing stylish black rain-boots. The weather report said it was going to rain. Fashion-wise Ruki would wear an outfit like that, Reita thought. Out of curiosity he continued observing this character while he browse through the instant noodles aisle where he could over-see the Ruki-look-alike, who was contemplating which jar of tomato sauce to get. Reita remembered Ruki liked spaghetti also. But after all this time all Reita saw was the back of this person's head.

Giving up the notion of stalking this stylish stranger Reita finished up his shopping, went to the checkout, then came outside the supermarket to the sidewalk where it began to rain lightly. He walked to a crosswalk and stopped. A few feet from him stood that Ruki-look-alike. While the waited for the pedestrian signal to light Reita became curious again. He really want to see this person's face. 'Look this way, look this way', he chanted in his head, thinking he had the power of ESP. As though the other heard him, the guy looked back at Reita. And it was Ruki. The real thing.

Reita was wide eyed. He couldn't believe it. Just then the people around them began to move forward. Strange, because Reita didn't even notice there were that much people waiting at the crosswalk. Before he knew it he was carried along with the crowd to the other side of the road. Once everyone had disperse it only left Reita and Ruki face to face, awkwardly. They exchanged some "Hey"s and moved a little closer into the sidewalk due to the increasing rain as they kept walking.

"So, how ya doing'?" Reita started with a causal question.

"Fine," Ruki answered flatly, turning his face away while the other was looking at him. "You?"

"Okay." Reita wasn't getting any facial response from Ruki so he turned his eyes forward. "Heard you went to Hawaii."

Ruki snapped a quick glance at Reita and looked away again. "Guess you talked to my mom, huh," he said, sounding not too happy.

"I called your place and she answered. I asked where you were but she wouldn't tell. We kept talking until I mentioned I missed her miso soup. She was so happy, she just told me you went to Hawaii. Your mom was so sweet."

"So you tricked my mom."

"Not exactly. I really do like your mom's miso soup," Reita tried to explain how he wasn't a liar or was trying to trick anyone.

Reita looked at the side of Ruki's face and noticed a bit of a tan compared to the natural pale milky skin the other always had. Not only his face, Reita saw the tan on Ruki's neck and nape. He wondered if he pulled back Ruki's collar shirt he'd see more of the darken skin inside. Just a thought though. Reita shook his head to clear him mind. He wanted to try again with another question or two.

"So, what were you doing in Hawaii? Why the secrecy? You didn't go eloping and went on a honeymoon, did ya?" Reita asked jokingly and laughed.

Ruki didn't find this funny like he usually would have. Reita liked cracking jokes and Ruki tend to laugh at all of them. Even if it was the lamest joke he'd at least give him a snort to humor Reita. But not the slightest smile came to Ruki's lips. They gradually stopped at the bottom of an over the road pedestrian bridge. Ruki turned and looked up to face Reita for the first time since the crosswalk.

"I wanted some time alone," Ruki gave an answer to Reita's previous question. He cast his eyes down for a second. "Ya know, I'm not feeling so well. Why don't we hang out and talk another time."

"You're not feeling well?" Reita stared at Ruki's for a moment concerned, then placed the back of his hand to the other's forehead. Ruki instantly flinched away from the touch. Reita didn't pay attention to the reaction, instead he gave his diagnosis. "You're kind of cold. Maybe it's the rain."

Reita looked up at the sky as if it just dawned on him that it was actually still raining and they're getting a bit wet. "Let's see your hand." Not really asking, Reita took Ruki's hand and held it for a second before the other snapped it back. "It is cold."

Something suddenly popped in his head. "Hey, I forgot." Reita began digging in one of his bags of groceries pulling out a black umbrella and got it open. He moved closer towards Ruki to cover him too. "I just bought this new umbrella from the supermarket. How about I walk you home with it?"

Ruki took a step back to make them some space. "It's not raining that hard. I can manage okay. Bye." As quick as his response he ran up the stairs of the bridge.

Something didn't seem right. Reita ran up the stairs and Ruki was standing in the middle of the bridge leaning over the railing. He went up to him slowly, worried if he was too fast the other might sense him and run away. He wasn't sure why he thought that would happened. But it might. He didn't want to take the chance. Eventually, Reita found himself a spot about two feet away from Ruki.

"I thought you were heading home," Reita said to get the other's attention.

Ruki didn't seem as surprise as Reita expected. "Me too. But halfway through I thought if I stood up here for a while I could watch."

"Watch what?" Reita wanted to know.

"Watch you walking away," Ruki turned to Reita, "like I always do."

Reita didn't know how to answer to that.

Ruki continued talking, while looking down at the moving cars below them. "I like watching your back. I like the way it looks so warm. Like your hands. They're really warm when you touched me." Paused for a long minute, as though what he said had tapped a cord within himself. "You want to really know why I went to Hawaii without telling you?"

"Why?" Reita heard his own voice cracked, which made him a little more nervous about what he was about to hear.

Ruki was really trying not to look at Reita by this time. "I needed the distance, from you. Because if I didn't see you I could stop thinking about you, I thought." He laughed. "But it didn't work. And here we are. Still going no where like before."

A silence lingered. And Ruki began to leave. Now Reita was the one at the middle of the bridge watching the other walk away. It's a sad feeling. 'So this was how you felt...', Reita thought to himself as he went after Ruki.

Reita grabbed Ruki by the arm at the end of the bridge. All the while his other arm was handling the bags of groceries as his hand held the umbrella over them. Reita insisted, "Please, let me walk you home."
