Digression
Story Written by Tokiko
Sometimes my friends say I'm like a cat wandering the city. Or a lion on the prowl as they might say, haha, a reference to my hair, I guess.
See, on most evenings I'm a host at a certain club. I'm not saying the name because it's really not that interesting, compared to the other thousands of them in Japan. My job is to pour drinks and flirt with the clients, who are mostly women but occasionally a couple men will stumble in "by accident". And I'd also have some light-hearted (half-hearted) conversations with them and do these stupid little magic tricks or tell a story of some drunken night I had, which in short is to completely humiliate myself to get a huge wad of extra cash in my back pocket.
So then on weekends I can go out late somewhere to finally have my own little fun. I mean every cat likes to have his very own play-thing too. And if there's an invitation or whatever, there might be a bit of sex in some guy's room.
Walking up to a certain bar, I'd always see this one guy. "How long have you've been here?"
"Not long." This is what he always says, but he must have been there for hours, as usual.
"Waiting for someone?" We met three months ago. And to not prolong the guessing game his name is Ruki, though, not the main play-thing I want to talk about but let’s just roll with it.
"He's not coming." Whenever he says that he has this obvious kicked-puppy look.
"Want to go somewhere?" I think he's kind of cute.
"My place?" And he's easy too.
"Okay." So why would I put down an invitation like that?
It's not because I need the money, not because I'm addicted to sex, or because I'm crazy about it. It's just that if there's a partner to have it with, I like sex. It's especially nice when they are really cute and make a lot of noise when you're doing them.
For presenting my body, I devour my fill of pleasure and nothing else.
"Hey, why don't we live together?"
I just walked out of the shower with only a towel around my waist and he says this sort of thing. Where's the 'you look sexy come screw me again'? I want that line instead.
I rub a towel over my head so I can't see him. "That's a little..." I hesitate, and then I feel this warmth circle around me. I stop rubbing my hair. It's his arms on my waist.
"We broke up." He's talking about that person he's been waiting for at the bar. "He's not coming back. This place is too big for just myself so...." He squeezes me tighter, burying his face into my neck (and he's shorter than me by the way). I wish he didn't. I just took a shower, man, and he's sticky.
Plus, I got a place of my own. It's not as big as this place, but I still like mines. I don't get him. Maybe he's getting too much for me.
"Hey, the shower's free. Why don't you take one? And you're kind of tickling me." I chuckle playingly as I tug on his arms to release me. I have to get out of here.
"Yeah." He smiles at me then went in as I exit the bathroom and slide close the door behind me.
Without a word, without a note, I left.
This Ruki guy was just a heartbroken kid. I was trying to be nice, so I talked to him. And in the end all I wanted was a little fun for myself as a reward. It's like we just repeated this 'meet and screw' pattern ever since we met. Who knew he was going toward that sort of 'relationship'. Is he trying to ruin me? Damn, this is depressing...
Therefore, I arrive here, a 100-story residence building for the rich peeps. Just looking up at this place makes my neck hurts. Maybe I should stop doing it. But it's just so tall...
I buzz the door bell as I wait for my beloved to answer it.
"Eee... got kicked out by your landlord again?" My beloved likes to make jokes.
I grin, ruffling his long silky-stringy black hair and I walk in through the door pass him. "Nope, but I don't mind if I stayed the night."
"You don't mind?" My beloved Aoi knits his brow like he's mad. "Shouldn't I be saying that line?"
"So you don't?" I bounce on the couch to test the springs. "I'll sleep here tonight then."
"Hey, don't decide on your own." Aoi picks up the pillows I dropped.
"Alright, if you wish, I'll sleep in your bed." I'm just kidding with all this of course, but it's just so funny seeing him react.
"Why don't I just throw a futon down on the streets and you sleep there instead," Aoi suggests.
If he's going to be like that..."Aww~ why does A-chan have to be so mean to U-chan like that?" I cry, hugging his arm and swing it like a little spoiled kid with the voice.
"Okay, okay" Aoi surrenders with his hands up. "Stop and tell me what you want."
"Fine," I loosen my grip on his right arm, but still holding on. I take a deep breath of him, his scent and rest my head on his shoulder. Then I sigh.
"What's the matter with you?" Aoi asks me without a growl in his voice, but soft, giving up his tough act.
"'Why don't we live together?'" I repeat the same line that Ruki kid said to me, and I feel the muscles in Aoi's arm tense up. I smile to myself. Is he nervous?
"Someone said that to me tonight. This kid I met at a bar." I could instantly feel Aoi's arm muscles relax again. "I told you about him, right?"
"You ran out on him, didn't you?" Yup, my beloved knows me so well.
"He freaked me out." Like, seriously. "What was I suppose to do?"
Aoi shakes his head and grabs a cigarette from a pack on coffee table and lights it in his mouth while I'm still holding on to his right arm. Then he lay back so I do too.
Aoi and I met back in college. We were in the same major, literature, so we had the same classes too. We somehow became friends. But then I received a call from back home that father's company went bankrupt. Father was unemployed, that meant there wasn't any money left for me to continue college.
So I dropped out one month into the semester to get a job to support myself. And of all places I got a job at a host club. The money practically poured in thanks to the good genes my parents passed down to me. It was also at the host club that I met Aoi again. It had something to do with his cousin who also worked there, which no one was suppose to know because the cousin was underage. So yea, that was what happened. Plus, I got so drunk one night that I fell into a pile of trash by some rich guy's house and Aoi was the one who found me, took me back to his place, and I've been looking for a way to repay him ever since.
"Can you move? You're heavy." Aoi nudges me with the shoulder of his I'm leaning on.
Unfortunately, he doesn't seem too into me. Not that I'm in love with him either. I don't like being attached to someone. "Is that so..." I reach over around his waist and nuzzled into his chest.
"Are you a cat of something?" He snorts.
I say nothing because I see someone watching us.
"Should I leave?" It's Aoi's on-and-off live-in guest. His name's Kai and I think they're distant cousins or something. He doesn't actually live here, but he sticks around when he's in town. They seem close and I've got no problem with it.
"Of course not." Aoi shifted to the other side of the couch to make space for the guy. "Sit over here," he says, and pats the new space between us.
Kai hops over like some obedient dog and I'm left squish to the side. Apparently, this couch is not made for three grown men to sit together. Damn, Italian sofas.
"Hey, where's the popcorn?" Aoi asks the dog man.
"Popcorn?" I question.
"Just put it in the microwave," Kai says then turns to me. "Yea, we've rented some DVDs want to watch with us Uruha."
Dude, have some respect and add '-san' at the end. It's not like we're friends or something. Well, anyway, it's not like I've got anywhere else to go. And I don't want to go home yet. "Eee, okay, why not?" I smile and act civil.
So after three movies straight, all horror, all which I don't get, I'm here hang over the side of the couch. I've probably dozed off five times, and every time I'm woken up by the person next to me who tries to hide from a dead girl in the television screen. While Aoi's over there laughing about how stupid each movie was.
"You know what," I get up from the couch, "I'm going to bed."
"Wait," Aoi says, stopping me as I walk to the hallway, "whose bed are you talking about?"
"Yours." I squint my eyes sleepily and point back at him with my finger.
"... Okay, I'll sleep here then," Aoi says casually.
Darn and I was hoping for an objection and a good fist fight. BOO~!
A moment later I come back to the living room with a set of pillow and sheets and plop my self on the couch. "I'm sleeping here tonight too."
"Okay, then I'm going back to my bed." Aoi get’s up from the couch and stretches as he walks to the hallway I just went and came back from.
Kai does the same after turning off the DVD player and TV. "Me too. Can't believe it's 4AM already. Goodnight Uruha." This follows with the lights being turn off and me standing alone in the dark.
I snap. "Huh? Wait!" I shuffle to Aoi's bedroom door in home slipper. "Hey, wait a minute..." Before I can even finish I get the door slam in my face. "...It's COLD out here!" I knock I couple times and only get air.
If he isn't going to take care of me he shouldn't have brought me home in the first place.
Shit, now I'm really like a stray a cat.
