Heisuke: Well. Here I am in a sword shop in Kyoto. As for why? Thanks to the commotion in Ikedaya, my sword is pretty much in rags. Although the wound on my forehead can heal with some saliva, that doesn't work for a sword. So I'm here to get a replacement. ...Why am I explaining like this? Never mind! Sword... sword... How about this? Ah. It's a little too light. Feels like holding a feather. Then this... Ah. This one is too long. I could get the swordsmith to shorten it a little when I pay, but should I just take this one?

Souji: Well, Heisuke? Are you here for swords? That's rare.

Heisuke: Oh! Souji. Actually I....

Saitou: Souji and Heisuke, what are you two up to together?

Souji: Oh, Hajime-kun. Actually we just met.

Heisuke: That's right.

Souji: Are you two feeling alright? If you're not on duty today, better stay in the quarters and rest.

Heisuke: Feeling alright?

Saitou: Your wounds from Ikedaya.

Heisuke: Oh that! That'll heal with a few licks.

Saitou: *sigh* Souji too?

Souji: I wasn't injured to begin with. What are you talking about, Hajime-kun?

Saitou: I see. Oh well. You two look healthy enough. That's good.

Souji: Yep yep. Back on topic. Heisuke, you need something here, right?

Heisuke: Yep. Since this dude is done for, I need a new sword.

Saitou: Is this... Kazusanosuke Kaneshige?

Souji: Ah-ah. It's pretty much worn-out.

Heisuke: It's ruined since that night I slashed so many ronin that I lost count. Can't be helped.

Saitou: "Can't be helped" is no excuse to give up on such a celebrated sword. Have you tried sharpening it?

Heisuke: No matter how many swordsmiths I asked, they all say it's beyond repair. So I need a new one.

Souji: Easy for you to say. A sword this good wouldn't be easy to find.

Heisuke: I figured so. But I think as long as it's easy to use, then it's a good sword. I'm not that attached to swords. As long as it can replace my previous one, any sword will do.

Saitou: (raised voice) Hey Heisuke!

Heisuke: Eh? What's that for?

Saitou: This is Kazusanosuke Kaneshige, a world-famous sword! You wrecked it and even want to dump it... What a shame for sword-users.

Heisuke: Even if you say so...

Souji: It's Heisuke's bad. Geez. When will you learn?

Heisuke: Fine. My bad. Anyway, I have no idea, so why don't you two pick a nice one for me?

Saitou: Alright. Even though it's hard to find one comparable to Kazusanosuke Kaneshige, you do need a sword for carrying out your duties. I'll help.

Souji: What's your budget?

Heisuke: Any will do. After receiving the reward for Ikedaya, I think I have 200 Ryou to spare.

Souji: Heh. I knew Heisuke is from some rich family. Maybe even a son of some bigwig.

Heisuke: Why do you say that?

Souji: Because only someone well-off would speak that way. To begin with, this Kaneshige isn't something an ordinary nobody could own. Surely it's expensive. But the point is, money isn't enough to buy it. Not just money, a noble birth is also required.

Heisuke: Nah. That's not how it is. I'm merely a ronin. I got this sword after going through a lot of things... but nothing worth noting.

Saitou: That's right, Souji. Shinsengumi is composed of people from all kinds of upbringing. Many of us have pasts that we don't want to talk about. Don't pry it out.

Heisuke: Yep yep yep.

Souji: Hmmm~ Never mind then. More importantly, about Heisuke's new sword. It'll be great if we can find a Kaneshige.

Saitou: Kaneshige is a private swordsmith of Ise Tsu Clan. His swords won't be out in the market, unless someone from Ise Tsu Clan takes it out... Now that you mentioned it, the lord of Ise Tsu Clan is "Toudou". Heisuke's family name is Toudou. That's too much of a coincidence.

Heisuke: Eh?

Souji: Coincidence happens. Right, Heisuke?

Heisuke: Eh? Eh? Ah! This sword! How about this one? Looks sharp.

Souji: Better drop it. Or you'll regret it.

Saitou: Yes. It's a blunt sword not worth of your money.

Heisuke: Geh. Okay.

Souji: By the way, what kind of sword do you prefer?

Heisuke: Well, something like my previous one will do.

Souji: A sword as sharp as Kaneshige.

Saitou: No. A sword as famed as Kaneshige.

Heisuke: Such as?

Saitou: There aren't many swords on par with Kaneshige, right?

Souji: That's right. To be as sharp as Heisuke's Kaneshige, that must be...

Together: Kotetsu.

Heisuke: Kotetsu? I've heard its fame and liked it since. I'll take that then.

Souji: Hey Heisuke, do you want the same sword which Shinsengumi's Commander owns? Commander Kondou is the ace of Shinsengumi, while you, although an executive, are merely a captain. Yet you want the same sword?

Saitou: How much do you think a Kotetsu costs? And price isn't even the main problem. It's not sold in market.

Souji: That's why naive boys from well-to-do families are so troublesome.

Saitou: Um.

Heisuke: You don't have to be so mean. If that's the case, don't bring up Kotetsu in the first place. Aren't you supposed to suggest a sword for me?

Souji: You're far from using a Kotetsu. Kotetsu is good. Truly a great sword. It suits Kondou-san so well.

Saitou: Indeed Kotetsu is great. But speaking of excellent swords, Hijikata-san's 11th generation Kanesada is also impressive.

Heisuke: Hello? Wait...

Souji: Even so, Kondou-san's Kotetsu is the best.

Saitou: No. Taking every aspect into consideration, Hijikata-san's Kanesada is the best.

Heisuke: Hey! What about my sword?

Souji: Quit nagging. Shut up for a moment will ya?

Saitou: You can't tell the difference anyway. Close your eyes and grab one you like.

Heisuke: Meanies!

Souji: Kotetsu is the best.

Saitou: No. Kanesada is.

Souji: Kotetsu.

Saitou: Kanesada.

Souji: *Tsk*

Heisuke: Hey! Both of you!

Souji: Hajime-kun, I think sooner or later we need to settle our differences.

Saitou: What a coincidence. I'm thinking the same.

Souji: Then, outside?

Saitou: To be overly gifted is unfortunate. To be unaware of this is even more unfortunate. I'll give you a lesson on this, Souji.

Heisuke: What the... You two! What about my sword? Aren't you choosing one for me? What am I gonna do without a new sword? Damn! That's why I hate sword maniacs!!!

Notes and personal thoughts:

1. In history, Toudou Heisuke was rumored to be an illegitimate son of the lord of Tsu Clan because of his sword. (Nagakura Shinpachi wrote this down too.) In Hakuoki, Heisuke really is Tsu's lord's son. That's why Heisuke used to receive a good amount of money to cover his life expenses. Too bad it ceased after he ran off to Shieikan (mentioned in Reimeiroku Saitou route Ch5).
Although Heisuke avoided talking about this, his splandid sword gave him away. XD Story about why he avoided it was elaborated in Reimeiroku Heisuke Route.

2. Heisuke made 2 mistakes here. One is he's careless of his sword in front of Saitou the sword-lover. Two is he got meddled in fanboy war. XD

3. There are many hearsays about how Kondou get his Kotetsu. One of which is, it's a present from Saitou. When listening to this track I was wondering... Since Saitou bought it, he should know Kondou-san's Kotetsu is a very finely made counterfeit. This cute comic gave a nice explaination. XD (Source: pixiv id=9849874)

4. I'll make a longer post about Shinsengumi's swords later.
