While I agree with the basic thrust of the....cartoon squirel, I think that some reporters do in fact help more by shining a spotlight and asking questions. Would any of us know the extent of damage if not for reporters? Think about the relief effort that is garnered by traumatic photos and video. Also Scott, I really urge you (and anyone else) to download this clip from CNN in which Anderson Cooper lays into a Senator from Louisiana, it really is heart felt, it seems as if he is a step away from losing it and the best part is this :
COOPER: Excuse me, Senator, I'm sorry for interrupting. I haven't heard that, because, for the last four days, I've been seeing dead bodies in the streets here in Mississippi. And to listen to politicians thanking each other and complimenting each other, you know, I got to tell you, there are a lot of people here who are very upset, and very angry, and very frustrated
( ... )
Anderson Cooper does NOT represent most journalist. He is the only one I've seen thusfar, but then again I'm mostly watching CNN, show any compassion towards these people at all. Only a VERY small portion of them are even talking to the government or FEMA or Red Cross at all. Most of them are sticking mics in the faces of very tired and very angry people asking them to tell them everything that has happened to them when all they want to do is shower and sleep. That to me is helping no one. I saw views of news people just sitting there filming people in trouble, not budging to go help them out, just filming. That is not helping us, that is not helping them. Video tape someone going to help that person out if you must video tape something, I know you have more than 1 person on your crew. It's just frustrating that these people are right there and aren't doing a damn thing to help out.
Anderson Cooper on the other hand is my news journalist hero.
