As to earthquake predictions, I love 'em. As all of Japan is located on the Pacific Rim ring of fire, predicting an earthquake there is a bit like predictions of 'morning will follow night'. They are bound to be right eventually but their timing is a little tricky. After Loma Prieta earthquake struck San Francisco Bay Area in 1989 we haven't heard much about the "big one" coming but we should start generating them again soon.
As a lapsed mathematician, I also find all of this prediction nonsense amusing. You can almost always predict that the media will misinterpret what a probability of an occurrence means...
