Finally, does anyone but me find it odd to give an award for best 'song' without crediting the songwriters (where appropriate) as well as the band/artist that performed it.

Hear hear! Yes, it's a sorry state of affairs, but the credit for the song inevitably seems to go to the singer who recorded it, not the songwriter who wrote it. Huh, I say. Not all songwriters are blessed with glorious singing voices (she says gloomily)...

Given half the crapstuff that is churned out these days, I'd not want my name known as the person who wrote it!

Maybe so, but I think as a general rule I tend to prefer songs sung by singer-songwriters. Most played currently are probably Sarah McLachlan, Beth Orton, and Kathryn Williams - who all do benefit from being able to sing.

I've found out a bit more about where that list of five came from - a bunch of music pundits came up with a long-list of 25 and then they were voted on by Radio 2 listeners - explains a lot!

Yeah, as a songwriter, I would much, much rather sing my own work. But frankly, my voice is never going to cut it. Not that it's awful, it's pretty much in tune and has a nice enough tone, but it just ain't good enough.

It's very depressing.
