UK appears to plan phasing out of degree classifications...

This was news to me that the UK universities have come to the conclusion that our much loved degree classifications (1st, 2:i, 2:ii, 3rd etc) could be phased out and replaced, over time, by a system of "credits".

It looks doubtful that classification would ever be fully replaced.

I think additional detail may be useful, but ultimately I'm not sure how useful it would be. Or welcomed by the recruitment markets outside of specific graduate recruitment programmes.

Indeed - it appears more useful and relevant for people going on either to further study or into academia-related careers.
