Something worth emphasizing about the movie: in spite of its weaknesses and foibles and fumblings, it has a kickass cast.
I know I focus a lot on Cumberbatch (hey, I'm a huge fan and he's a main character), but I did note the quality of people like Peter Weller and Bruce Greenwood (basically the only two people Cumberbatch didn't blow out of the movie water). The newbies like Alice Eve, and especially the old crew. Yes, all those actors are awesome, but in this movie we can actually see their awesome acting chops. People like Urban, Pegg, Cho and Yelchin finally get a chance to shine (and not just their characters).
Unfortunately... *big breath* all this acting greatness does reveal 2 weaknesses. Pine and Quinto. Objectively I think Pine is all he's supposed to be. He IS Kirk. In fact he's almost becoming Kirk AND Shatner. But. This one character does not make him a great actor. Quinto is slightly worse for wear. I don't think he's a great actor, and I don't think he's a great Spock. I don't know how much is direction or Quinto himself, but this movie threw me off Quinto as Spock quite a bit.
And, unfortunately (again), I have to admit Cumberbatch is yet again to blame. Next to this human[Spoiler (click to open)](even if vastly improved), the supposedly Vulcan Spock looks like a bumbling emotional mess. Robot? Ah! I saw a cold, machine like man in this movie, and trust me, it wasn't the vulcan.
As an end to this clearly Cumberbatch adoring rant, let's examine somebody else's flaws. Let's go with *drum roll* Cumberbatch. Yes, he is not flawless. For all the good his particular characteristics do him (that angular face that nobody would call handsome, that deep, effective voice, those colourless eyes, that certain inexplicable presence) he does love to pull on his "actorly" cards: his very clear enunciation (sometimes effective, others bordering on the ridiculous), his crying on demand (I bet JJ wanted to use that, didn't he?), all those little technical acting tricks that are clearly above most others, are sometimes a bit too much. I have said it regarding the theater play Frankenstein: Cumberbatch was the best actor, but Lee Miller was more acessible and therefore more enjoyable for a complete theater layman.
Acting aside, I enjoyed the movie better the second time (I think I was too strung out the first time), even if I did think at the end there "oh, it's now gonna be another 10 minutes before Cumberbatch is on again. BORED." And before you ask, yes, I have tried therapy and it clearly didn't work. LOL
