Lol the title is so lame. But it was 0:54AM when I wrote this thing. Not that I'd have any better ideas for the title now either. :P

The breakfast onigiri? Check.
Keys? Check.
Mobile phone, pencil case, earphones? Check, check, and check.
Tetsuya closed his bag and threw the strap across his shoulder, put on his shoes and glanced at the mirror from the open toilet door before rushing out of the main door. It was better not to stay still more than two seconds at once or he’d totally lose his courage even before getting to the university.
To be honest he knew it didn’t matter if he felt brave or scared - the other people would never see the difference - but he knew by experience that the day would be notably easier for him if he could keep his thoughts calm and cool from the very beginning.

Either the self-prepping actually helped or he was simply too frozen to understand what was going on around him but the next two hours passed like a misty dream that he could hardly remember afterwards.
The school campus and the buildings were huge. There were people everywhere. Together with hundreds of new students he heard several welcoming and informing speeches and by the lunch time he felt dizzy of all the new information. Dizzy, lost, and lonely.
He sat in the university café table alone, realizing the moment was probably his loneliest in years. He knew nobody, and he had no idea how to make friends with someone. The feeling brushed painfully close to the day he had realized his old junior high school mates hadn’t really cared about him. On the same day he had met Tatsuya at the batting center.
Too bad Tatsuya wasn’t there with him now.
“Are these seats free?”
Before Tetsuya managed to open his mouth a girl sat down on the opposite side of the table, and she was followed by three more people.
“I saw you in the first group information lecture,” the girl continued eagerly, “It seems like we’re on the same class so I figured it’d be for the best if we all got to know each other from the very beginning! My name is Harada Mika, nice to meet you!”
Something in the girl’s straightforwardness reminded Tetsuya about Tatsuya, and he couldn’t help smiling no matter how confused he was by his new classmates’ sudden appearance.
“This is Takasugi Nozomi,” Mika continued, “we’ve been friends since primary school, and these two are Murata Junichiro and Inoue Kenta.”
“Nice to meet you all,” Tetsuya said and really meant it, even more when the four students started a lively conversation and managed to make him feel like he was an equal part of it despite not saying much. The best thing was that none of them tried to force him into pointless small-talk even once. This was something he was used to; talkative companions who didn’t mind his silence.
He was thankful to the new people who took him into the group so easily, just like Tatsuya and the others had done.
[The school was okay and the people on my class really nice,] he wrote on his mail to Tatsuya in the evening. After a while he typed another message. It was embarrassing to even think about saying such things but he felt like he really should.
[Thank you. For accepting me when some others didn't.]
Tatsuya's answer came in a few minutes.
[No problem, mate. That's what friends do! ヽ(*≧ω≦)ノ]
Tetsuya wanted to point out that they hadn't actually been friends yet, that time, but he decided to say nothing. They were friends now and that was the only thing that mattered.
