Sorry to hear life is being tough right now.

My favorite author in the world is Lois McMaster Bujold, specifically her Vorkosigan series. You can get the reading order here: https://www.goodreads.com/series/98254-vorkosigan-saga-chronological

You can skip the first 2 books which some people find to be to much of a romance (although I don't think so) and just jump in with Book 3, which is where I first started the series. The main character is unique, to say the least. Let me know if you try her out.

I just finished reading The Folk of the Air series (Starting with The Cruel Prince) by Holly Black. YA, but you might enjoy it.
