I think I'm getting a non-removable cast, sadly. The hospital sent me home in an air cast after I broke it on Saturday, and from Saturday through Thursday, I was pretty spoiled by the ability to open it up to scratch (or to ice, which was important when it was still trying to swell). Dr. Hupfer sounded like this would be an actual all-in-one-piece cast, which is kind of a bummer but which I guess I can also understand, since it ensures that the support is exactly where he wants it all the time, rather than relying on me to always strap the air cast on tight enough or inflate it enough. We'll see. At this point, I'm just going to be happy if he tells me I can start putting weight on it!!
Glad to hear that things have been going well (for certain values of "well"). I still need to catch up with you by phone sometime, but it's not urgent. Then again, if you want to talk to someone besides yourself, feel free to give me a call (best time is generally mid-afternoonish, central time)
I finally remembered, yesterday, that I was supposed to call you. Oops!
I'll email you my landline number. Cell phone gets crappy reception indoors (the joys of being way out in the country) and the landline, which isn't normally used, is only set up to make local calls.
I knew going in that there was some amount of risk, even when just taking pictures "from the sidelines"... that's why they had to vote me onto the department before I could start responding to incidents as a photographer... so I'd be on the FD's insurance. Granted, I didn't expect my particular danger point to come during a training exercise, but oh well... it's one of life's little surprises. All in all, I'm still glad I got involved with the department and still intend to keep going, both in my primary position as photographer and web geek and also in getting through the basic firefighter training so I know more about what's going on and how I might be useful. The broken ankle may make me a little more cautious, especially around hoses, but I refuse to let it take away something that I enjoy and where I can make a difference

Ain't it grand to know you have such great friends? IMO, it says a lot about how terrific you are!
*hugs* and hope you heal really fast.

And yes, I feel extremely blessed to have friends who've been willing to rearrange their schedules in order to help me get through this. :-)

I hope you get to have an air cast. I loved my air cast after my foot injury last year; it let me wash, and provided full support.
