The first word that usually comes to mind is "squalid" :)

It's fairly grim. You're usually fighting to break even, not get ahead. It's what's also been called "PVP Enabled" in that it's an accepted part of that game's practice to kill each other off.

Is the PvP indiscriminate or is there usually some reason for it?

I haven't seen what I considered to be indiscriminate PvP in the events I've played. Though the game is set on a Western continent of the world with a large native population of humans and other races. But races from the East have, in recent history, arrived and colonized. So a lot of characters have an "East v. West" mentality that may or may not lead to fairly indiscriminate PvPing of the other group.

In fact, actual PvP has been extremely rare, though that's partly because the setting is one with an actual legal system, and no one wants to get in trouble with the law. While PC conflict is extremely common, it rarely comes to blows, and so far has never come to killing.

I have never played Aralis, though I do want to one day. That said, I believe that the general tone of it, from readign the LJ postings of others is something along the lines of....

BLOOD ZOMBIES! RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really hope this was meant to be a part of your post and not the beginning of an apocalyptic zombie attack...

*fear of zombiepocalypse*

The self-aware are always the first to die in the zombiepocalypse. ;)
