If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?I've put some real thought to this but I can't say as I've got much of an idea of what to answer. I've sailed all about the globe, you see, and seen so many places that most Englishmen may never see, and sometimes when it's particularly hard-going on the quarterdeck you'll turn to ( Read more... )

If you could live anywhere in the world.................. ladyravenwood April 18 2004, 02:20:16 UTC
I too have sailed the world over. Have seen many strange and beautiful places. Some I have liked better than others.
For myself, it is not the destination but the act of getting there. The longer the voyage the better. I suffer from an ever present restlessness which is alleviated only when I am at sea under sail. It has been a very long time since I have lived on land.
The "Raven" will be my home for as long as she is seaworthy.
I have no doubt that you will one day be made Captain, Mr.Pullings.

It is true that there is no home like the captain's berth on one's own ship. And you'll get yours, Tom, I've no doubt.

It's right kind of you to say so, Sir, and I'd best trust your judgement, what with you being the proper sea-captain what you are and all. I should say as you've got a feel for it now, those as'll make captains and those as won't, though you know I'm not one to toot my own horn, as it were.

Which I mean to say as I'm right glad at heart to hear you say it, Captain!

If it comes within my authority to see that you get your step up, you may be certain that I shall do what I can for you. As you know, sometimes there just ain't enough ships! We shall have to take some fine prizes to be brought in.

I expect you'll make a fine captain in the fullness of time.

I would expect, Tom, that you would grow tired with the land after a short time, as many true seamen often do, and so I too must agree that you would be happiest onboard your very own ship. And so you shall, one day.
