So I just finished watching the drama "Ouroboros" (like literally one hour ago). This is my first japanese drama after my long fandom hiatus.
I'm not gonna lie, I watched it because of Toma. And I think this is his most promising drama from my unwatch list. Plus he is with Oguri Shun here and I am a Hana Kimi true fanatic at heart so I really wanted to watch their drama reunion.
The plot revolves around two orphans who witnessed their teacher's murder when they were young. Toma's character, Ryuuzaki Ikou became a police officer and Shun is Danno Tatsuya, who became a yakuza. It is part of their plan to gain access both in the police system and the underworld so they can avenge their teacher. In the process of achieving justice, they discovered that their teacher's death is not an ordinary murder case.
I can't really say that the plot is fast paced nor slow paced. They distributed bits of hints and clues from each episode and I think that's really catchy. Especially with suspense/mystery genre, sometimes the beginning are usually boring and only the last few episodes are exciting to watch. But in this drama, there are revelations I think from each episode so you won't really loosen your grip to the drama.
One thing I really want to commend is the acting. I think all of them did a pretty good job.
I don't really give attention to Ueno Juri's character, Mizuki Hibino at first. She is the daughter of an elite police officer and Ryuuzaki's detective partner. But suprisingly, she became my favorite character in this series.
And I kind of ship Ryuuzaki and Mizuki, which is a big deal beacuse I dont really just ship Toma with his co-actors 😆 I think Ueno Juri portrayed her chatacter well which amazed me because the last time I see her is in Nodame Cantabile and she didn't really give an impression to me that time. Now, especially in this drama, I think she's really a good actress.
And Shun Oguri is superb in this drama too. I don't really follow Shun that much but I know that he is an established actor. I only watched three of his drama, Gokusen, HanaDan and Hana Kimi (come to think of it, he was in most of japanese classic drama sugoi!) and I think his character in Ouroboros gave the most justice to his acting skills. And I know Shun is such a dorky person (judging from his interviews and drama bts) but I always see him act in a serious character so I kinda want to see him in a funny one.
And of course, Toma. I mean what would you expect to one of the most versatile actor in Japanese dramaland in his time? I think Toma has a lot of difficult scenes here and all were beautifully done. (Not being biased here, you should watch it yourself). And he looks really good here too. (Okay a little biased this time, but he really do).
Also, one of the reason I watch this drama is because of Seino Nana. I haven't heard about her before the marriage news and I kind of want to check her out. Also I wanted to see where it all begun and expect some sparks with her and Toma. Hahaha. , Although I don't really like her character in the series, I think she's good and she's very pretty too. (Watch out for the fight scenes!)
And my denoument is, this drama is highly recommended.
My rating would be 8.5/10
It is a very interesting drama but I feel like there are so many things happening in the first few episodes, alot of characters involved, a lot of names to remember. My slow self is having a hard time. Haha. But it gets really exciting as the drama progressed. I actually finished episode 6 until the end in one seating. I even skipped my lunch because I was so eager to watch and see who is the mastermind. Hahaha.
There are some loopholes in this drama too, characters wise (especially Yuiko sensei) Some people do not like how it ends but I think what happened is how it supposed to be, considering the circumstances they are in from the beginning.
Although I think this is one of those drama that you will only watch once or twice at most. I think that's the downside of mystery series, once you already knew the secret, it won't be as fun to watch as it did the first time. But all in all, I think it is worth your time.
Also, the ending song is Arashi's Sakura
But I personally like the other song "No One". I think it gives so much feels in the drama.
Ps.
I don't know if this drama was sponsored or just my sneaker-loving self is dominating me but I noticed Toma's shoes is really cool and I love it. I searched it online and found out it is by brand Pro Keds. Sadly, they do not have a distributor in my country but I think they ship nationwide. Here's the link if you want to be twinning with Toma (beacuse I do):

So why did this drama made me crave omu rice? Hmm... you have to watch it to find out.
(I even made my own omurice 😁)
