CHARACTER NAME: Combat Instructor Alleyne
FANDOM: Queen's Blade
CANON: When she and Nowa have gone their separate ways after the Queen's Blade tournament.
WHAT THEY LOST: Her relationship with Nowa, a half-elf student who studied under her. She was a young, free girl who taught Alleyne to appreciate happier, warmer feelings instead of discarding them as useless or unwelcome. Alleyne came to like her a great deal, maybe even love her, but her time was cut short with her due to racial tensions back at home being rough for half-elves. Nowa would exist to her, but as nothing more than a naïve student she once had, having forgotten that she had taught her there was more to life than combat and platitudes.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Alleyne, as her full title would imply, is the combat instructor and fighting master of the elven forests on the outskirts of the Queendom of Gainos. She has lived for over a thousand years and as a result is incredibly sharp minded and wise, sharing her wisdom using proverbs and adages. She is currently the head fighting teacher for her race and enjoys lecturing her students on their form, preferring a one-on-one method of teaching. That said, she is very military minded, coming across as a stoic drill instructor type, grading everyone she comes across on a 0-100 point scale on anything from weapon swinging to how cool they can keep their head in a fight.
Unlike most other elves in Gainos, who are racist and reclusive due to humans once trying to enslave them, she gives anyone a chance to impress her, judging them based on individual merits, usually combat related. She can hold a grudge, as seen with Echidna, a once friend turned runaway after they disagreed on elven laws. She's stubborn and logical, analyzing things as one would a battlefield, approaching everything with the right words and touch. Because of this, she tends to hide away her other emotions, and rarely smiles or compliments others. She is very loyal, however, and will stick by any student she feels excels in their studies or shows great potential, such as her favored student Nowa.
Alleyne tends to be extremely reserved and speaks little about herself, allowing herself to enoy things or be selfish even less so. Her only goals tend to be focused on helping train the best fighters she can, sharing her wisdom and battle tactics, and making sure people don't stray off onto dangerous paths in life. She'll be polite but curt to others, and is known for her brutal honesty even to strangers. She prefers to be alone or work with those she's deemed worthy, and then only keep them as close company. She views the Queen's Blade tournament to determine the country's queen as needed, but unfit for her, unless commanded to enter or to watch a student partake in it. She tends to stick to her home forest and train. Alleyne is a very guarded woman to put it lightly.
Despite her long life, not much is known about her history. At some point, she was very close to another elf named Echidna, but the two had a fight about how they viewed the laws of the forest, causing Echidna to leave and become a traveling mercenary. Alleyne still has some scars left from that and is not as quick to trust because of it. She met Nowa, who was an orphaned half-elf, as she wandered through the forest crying one day, saying if she learned to fight and hold her own, she would welcome her under her care. Alleyne grew closer to her than she realized, her more free and happy spirit having broken her icy shell after so long. When Nowa was ordered to participate in the Queen's Blade tournament, she ignored orders for possibly the first time in her life and followed her to protect her from the dangers of it. The two lost and began their journey home. Sadly, as she was beginning to accept her feelings for her and life for the first time in her long existence, the two had to part ways, mostly due to racial tension at home, Nowa giving her a magical stone to remember her by that she had risked her life for. Alleyne accepted it and went home, knowing they would cross paths again one day, and realizing not all of life has to be about fighting or being a hardass.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Alleyne sat by the window in the lobby of the inn she and Nowa chose to stay at. Her fingers rose to her temples and rubbed them slow and hard, letting out an annoyed sigh. She had not expected to run into Echidna of all people, especially in a place as large as the capital city. Despite her large age advantage over her, she was still far sneakier than she was. And for once, it had come in handy. The vile snake-woman had saved Nowa from some rather unsavory characters moments prior and she felt terrible for not having done it herself. It was hard to cope with such a feeling of failure. It had taken root in her gut and made her somewhat nauseous on top of her stress. Thoughts were clouding her. She had mixed feelings about all this. Echidna had hurt her deeply in the past, even so far as to run off, so why did she go out of her way to help her now? And could she properly thank her for it? Did she even want to?
She wanted to cry. She wanted to shout, swear, and curse the heavens. Tears formed a bit, but she refused to let them run, stifling them with shut eyes. But that's rather unbecoming of one in her standing and of her rank, so she just bit her lower lip and snorted, holding it all in and swallowing it hard. It was a beautiful day out and she hated the fact she could no longer enjoy it. Her face went pale and her expression went back to its default cold, calculated glare.
Alleyne growled at herself so she'd stop doting on it. It was nearing time for the tournament to start, and she could be called upon at any moment to fight. Training sounded good, so she slipped out back to let out some steam, swinging her spear around and meditating on what had happened. Eventually, she found herself resting on a tree branch, staring at nothing.
“Tch...You call yourself an instructor? Zero points. Don't let emotion get involved in your battles; it will only lead to your downfall.” she mumbled to herself, lowering her hat over her face in shame to hide it a bit before going back inside, hoping Nowa hadn't worried about where she slipped off to.
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: [It's a nice day out. Alleyne can be seen standing on end of a courtyard, thrusting her spear out and pointing it to some worn out students of hers across the way. Her expression is flat and cold, rarely blinking.]
I will give you credit where it is due. Your spirit and endurance is admirable for someone so young. However, your form is sloppy and your grip on your weapon is not as tight as it should be. Were this a real battle, you would be tripped up by now at least, dead at most. Don't wear yourselves out so soon after a fight's broken out. Instead, focus on making your body movements flow with your swings so you can move from one strike to the next without winding yourselves as you've done here.
[She sighs and puts her spear down, exhaling sharply.]
Thirty-nine points. I'll see you here again tomorrow, so rest while you can.
INTENT: The only idea I have at the moment are having her be a mentor figure or someone people could learn fighting techniques from, especially to younger ladies looking for a role model, though all would be welcome under her.
