Richard Dawkins, and one of his fellow Atheist friends, plan to arrange the arrest of Pope Benedict XVI for crimes against humanity. They have all sorts of reasons, though one of them was of course assisting in the cover up of many sex scandals ( Read more... )

While I agree with the fact that, yes, the Roman Catholic Church (and every other religious institution) needs to be held accountable for their policies and the the actions of their leaders, I have a huge issue with the new "Atheistic Zealotry" that's -- in every measurable way -- become just a replacement of one "belief system" for another, and *just* as much a**hole behaviour is being rationalized & excused because "I can't believe that you'd be so STUPID as to believe in all that woo-woo sh*t, man! Why don't you believe in SCIENCE, like all the COOL KIDS???"

I hope that Mr. Dawkins' using his celebrity to throw *more* energy behind this situation being addressed gets some action happening, sure, but he's not the only g*ddamned person/organization doing it... :o/

Aye, there are many other happy Atheists in the world other than just Dawkins. A certain amount of militant Atheism might be required to even out the playing field a tad, but I certainly wouldn't want yet another "faction" of sorts popping up in the world.

Yeah, Richard Dawkins is a troubling figure. I do agree with his argument that, while the principle of religious tolerance is foundational and crucial, it's been used inappropriately to stifle discourse. It is difficult to criticise a religious idea or the actions of a religious institution without being accused of persecution. Atheists seem to get a raw deal here, because the religious/spiritual majority doesn't seem to feel any reluctance to criticise atheists as deficient and undesirable.

However, his whole "The God Delusion" approach to bringing religion down a peg doesn't sit well with me. He's very confrontational, which gets attention, but not useful attention. You don't get respect by disrespecting others.

Aye, there is quite a lot of stifling going on behind the barrier of religious tolerance. I'm likely going to be reading that book in a bit, just for the hell of it. The roomie has been doing so, and rather enjoys it.

But yar, being abrasive and confrontational might not help as much as he might like. It only gets people jumping up and down all the quicker.

While I agree the church should be accountable for their action, I think in the current events, the warmonger from the US should have been arrested for crimes against humanity too.

Yeppers, there's quite a few folks who should have been arrested over the years for crimes against humanity. :p Said warmonger is definitely one of them.

This is absurd, and ignorant. I feel disgusted, and I know it's because of a lack of understanding in a lot of things.

This is analogous in idiocy to those people out there who are saying shit like "Poland is Russia's territory anyway" in regards to the recent political tragedy here and conspiracies arising from it.

A few facts for you.

  • The Pope does not condone paedophilia or sex crimes.
  • The Pope is not consenting to paedophilia or sex crimes.
  • It is not the Pope's fault that paedophiles or criminals choose to become clergymen. They aren't exactly going to tell anyone either. Anyone is welcome to the vocation regardless of who they are, were, and what they have done in life because Catholicism doesn't promote discriminating people or hating them and believes that with a positive outlook on life, the world, rights and wrongs and answers, people can be changed for good and everyone has a chance to make their life worth something.

While I can agree on the Pope having some degree of responsibility for the actions of clergy, I can definitely say that there is nothing the Pope would ever do to suggest, insinuate or otherwise allow people committing sex crimes as representatives of the religious organisation to be okay. It's daft that anyone would actually believe that either ( ... )

Well alright then. I suppose we can agree to disagree on the subject.

And yes, I have no doubt that the folks involved have a bias in their arguments and actions. But everyone usually does. ^^()

This day and age if that kinda crap started up again, I think far more people would fight back. I can hope that it wouldn't devolve into some kind of literal shooting war between modern times and the stone age, but you never know.

People still are stirring up all kinds of crap the world over for their religious beliefs, so who knows what might happen.
