Magpie as Metaphor

A week ago I decided I had to investigate the noises in the chimney-breast.

Some years before I moved into this house, builders removed the fireplaces, blocked up the hearths, and plastered and papered over the area. There used to be a hideously gaudy electric fire in front of the chimney-breast, but I managed to dump that in a skip when we moved ( Read more... )

How sweet. You know, this is exactly the sort of thing I would have done. But I would have made a bigger mess. Plug up the other end soon, or you WILL have a bigger mess!

Story's just got longer, actually. I haven't got round to filling up the hole in the wall yet, though I did buy some filler for that today. When I had the roof done some years ago I asked for the chimneys to be capped, but that's something that clearly didn't get done. More expense...

we have a magpie tree here - a plane tree in a line of plane trees where magpies roost at this time of year. There are generally upwards of 20, like black and white balls - dead cute. Though I haven't forgiven one of them for eating the baby blackbirds last year. Couldn't stop the bastard. Anyway, enough tles of magpies, how are you? Delighted to find this site.
