You could try a few of Nevil Shute's books for an Australian setting. "A town like Alice", probably the most famous. I read one of his books a long time ago, I remember I liked it quite a bit, but I don't remember which book it was that I read! :)

must have been the image in the beginning....i use lj-cut anytime the post gets too big..
