The Catwalk Club

Woo hoo! I finally went to a rock concert. My summer can be over now.

Yes, that's right, thebellsinside kindly let me tag along with her, her brother, and their nice friend Jesse to the Daphne Loves Derby show last night.

It was hecka longer than I expected--SIX bands from 7-11:45, and there was pretty much a constant flow of extremely loud rock music during that period--but really enjoyable. We quickly scouted out a safe place from which to watch the show--near the front and to the left of the stage--which was nice because it provided us with a place to sit (until the top of that bench broke, that is) and refuge from the ferocious push-pits that 15-year-old boys HAVE to start at ANY concert involving electric guitars ... but it was also apparently the designated smoking corner. Whatev.

This first band was called Coretta Scott, straight outta Spoanke, WA, and they were the most energetic, good-looking AND musically talented opening band I've seen in recent memory. I was le impressed, and I bought their CD after the show (which--upon first and second listens--rocks slightly harder than average, but there is not as much screaming as there was live, which means there's not ENOUGH screaming. Since when did I become a screaming fan? Let's move on).

The second band was called Dating Delilah David and Goliath, or maybe David and Delilah, or maybe something else entirely and now I can't figure out what their name was and it bugs me. (Thanks Steph!) They were pretty good too, although maybe not as good as CS--although maybe they were; it's really hard to tell live. But while CS had quite a unified look, DG (let's call them) was all over the place--nondescript singer who kinda looked like Jason Mraz (as Mark pointed out), overweight, 30-something guitarists, insanely small and grily and young-looking bassist, and um, a drummer. (Who ever notices the drummer? Unless, of course, he is Zac Hanson and/or you yourself are a drummer.) The singer had one HELLUVA scream, though, and that's probably what impressed me most about them. Every time he let out a long howl I just sat back and said "whoa!" to myself.

Anyway, the best bit of their set was when tiny guitarist Joey fell backwards into the crowd while playing, most likely attempting to crowd surf, except he did it so suddenly that nobody had time to prepare so he kinda fell to the ground in slow-motion as scene kids tried and failed to hold him up, even though he weighed approximately 80 pounds. He got up and walked through the crowd for a while, collecting ironic high-fives, and then the singer pulled him back up. After the song ended he said into the mic, "Let's just pretend that never happened, okay?" Well I'm sorry Joey, but that story is an integral part of this concert and I'm DEFINITELY not shutting up about it.

Aww, he was so cute though!

So the first two bands were both in the screamo tradition and I enjoyed them quite a lot, considering I'd never heard them before.

Next was Sherwood. They're a lot softer but they still rocked and were a favorite of the crowd. I knew one of their songs, "The Town That You Live In." A good, solid band, overall.

Next came Amber Pacific, who apparently performed at Warped Tour--at least in Washington--and were more of a pop punk band. Meh, they were mediocre. The lead singer looked like a frat boy or an Abercrombie model (as Steph pointed out), which made me more critical of the band as a whole, I must admit. He was also wearing a UW Huskies shirt, which means he probably goes to my school. Awesome.

Fifth up was Daphne Loves Derby! Woo! Their set seemed extremely short (no Steph, it wasn't just you) but good all the same. I liked it when Kenny got a break from singing in the middle of a song and he would thrash around with his guitar with the rest of the band. Hardxcore. Their songs are dangerously catchy, especially "Hammers and Hearts," and I predict they'll blow up soon. But I could be wrong.

Sixth and last was This Providence who were also at Warped and have a decent local following. They were good, but I'd have to listen to their album to make a more specific judgement because by this point I was ready for the loudness to end and we moved to the back to get some fresh (NON-smokey) air.

Hoorah! A show. Good times.

*whew!* Okay, gotta go dry my hair and call Ann. ZOMGWTF I'm leaving on Thursday.
