Guess what? My school is in money trouble. Hahahahahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I'm keeping this out of my official Korea blog for now because I don't want my family to worry, but I don't want to keep it to myself either.
Some people's pay is about a week late, such as Niamh's. I'm not due to get paid for about 2 more weeks, so hopefully their troubles will be sorted out by then, and it's apparently normal for Beaver to be a few days late with paychecks. Buuut I keep hearing worrying things from my coworkers -- i.e. that the director's sister is out trying to get a loan, and that the school will let the teachers know by the end of the month whether or not Beaver will be shutting down. Because apparently that's on the table.
I'm not panicking or stressing out too much yet. I have enough money in the bank in Canada to make a return trip home if worst comes to worst, or to survive out here while I look for another job. Mostly I'm just pissed off. Why import another foreign teacher when you apparently can't afford the ones you already have? Why can't you just be up front and honest with your employees about what state you're in and what you're doing to fix it, rather than making them run around in circles and worry? Teachers work really freaking hard, but it's hard to be motivated to put in that extra effort when you're not sure you'll be compensated for it. For all we know, we could be working for free right now, but oh yes please keep asking us for extra favors.
(Just to be clear, I don't actually dislike the people running the school - they're hardworking and under a lot of stress themselves - I just dislike the situation and wish they were handling it more professionally.)
If the ship does sink, hopefully one of my Korean coworkers will let me live with her while I look for another job! Or who knows, maybe everything will be fine next week. Not stressing, not stressing, it's the weekend...
