Brrrrr

Maybe it was dumb of me to move away from Florida to a cold place (that is actually still considered part of the subtropics, but... no, it's cold.) Maybe I should have done more (any) research. I don't know, but I need help from people who are more experienced with these "seasons ( Read more... )

55F. HA! Art would have my hide if I turned the thermostat any lower than 69. We keep it there day and night, and we do pretty well. The sun heats up our place well during the day at least.

No real advice for keeping warm as I'm practically sweating all day long. I'm so happy I get to go through this pregnancy thing during the winter! Though I did just realize that my wool pea coats no longer button up; I have no idea what I'm going to wear all winter long.

That's reassuring. I'll have to see our first utility bill and then make adjustments from there.

Good luck with the coat hunt. I'll have to try on my peacoat. It was oversized to begin with, so maybe it still fits!

Heating pads under your back would have you sweating even beneath the open night sky.

Electric blankets, on the other hand, while warm, also desiccate you crispier than a Kalahari corpse!

No prob.

Some other things I thought of...

I don't know if you have a car, but keep a bottle of Windex by the door. When the car doors get frozen shut, spray some into the space between the door and body and it melts the ice rapidly. It can also help with de-icing windows (weakens the ice, makes them less of a pain to scrape).

Timberland boots were great to help me avoid slipping on icy sidewalks, and make a great crunching noise when you walk on snow.

Down jackets look ugly but keep you very warm.

uhm...

I'll think of more, eventually.
