Why do expected things hurt so bad?....A note about Tiger

My cat just died. Well he wasn't my cat, he was my stepmom's cat, but he was in my life for over 7 years. It hurts so much right now, but I can't figure ouit why. He has been sick for days, and we knew it was coming, but still it hurts so much. I cant stop crying it hurts that bad. I wish i understood death exactly. I mean evryone says..."you live
