this is heartbreaking, screamed sniff

Mar 24, 2010 12:53

I read Moominsummer Madness recently and there was this one scene which I'll type up when I get home, I can't stop thinking about it.

all the kids are climbing a tree, except for Misabel who just watches them from a little ways off as usual, and sighs and says "it must be so nice to climb a tree"

so Moominmama tells her to go climb the tree with the others--

but, Misabel says "now it's not fun any more" and goes off to cry

...

idk how to describe how i feel about this

a bit annoyed at Misabel throughout the book for being her own wet blanket all the time, but also very sad for how she is the main barrier between herself and her happiness and there's not much anyone else can do to help.

i literally teared up reading this sob. i mean it's so beautifully constructed, you don't need extra sentences telling you how bad misabel feels or how she doesn't really get along with the other kids or how powerless adults are in this situation

ahhh i wish i could also write such complex conundrums in so few words

(bonus: sniff is not in the midsummer book ahahaha. also there is an amusing plot twist featuring snufkin and the consequences of one's revolutionary actions)

yes i am idling in office over lunch break thinking of moomins, waiting for lunch appointment and to get my double scoop ice cream (baskin robbins has some deal today where you get two scoops for the price of one if you show up wearing something pink). average day is average

moomins, the unbearable lightness of being
