Used to be a big fan, back when I was in eighth and ninth grade. I first read Martin the Warrior - and then went on to read a few more. My favourite, if I remember correctly, was Marlfox. Also have vague recollections of The Pearls of Lutra, Redwall, The Long Patrol and Salamandastron/m(?).
In all seriousness, though, LOTR as a "brand" of fantasy is much different from Potter/Eragon. It's much closer to the old masters such as Eddisson and Morris, whom nobody's even heard about. It's fashionable to be an LOTR movie geek, but there are very few out there who actually get any of the references, or the themes being used.
I picked up The Hobbit about nine or ten years ago and it just didn't catch my fancy. So I read Watership Down instead and didn't go near Tolkien again.

Now that it's fashionable to be a LOTR/Harry Potter/Eragon/God-knows-what geek, I refuse to go anywhere near that brand of fantasy.
