Breaking My Silence

Jun 23, 2015 11:58

I should preface this by saying that I am not sure exactly where to start. There have been so many events in this country in the past year or so that have equally scared, confounded, and angered me. I have largely kept silent, kept my opinions and thoughts to myself, but the latest terrible incident, in my own backyard, so to speak, has somehow ( Read more... )

know your roots, moral outrage, like a horse and carriage, the internet is a shiny thing of wonder, i hate politics, flames on the side of my face, put on your big girl underpants, sometimes i have unpopular opinions, racism is never "ironic", in the family way, that's debatable, all you need is love, sometimes i fuck up, sometimes i get my rant on

Thank you, anon, for your words of support. It is a privilege to be able to stay silent in the wake of the events of the past year or so, but not one I wanted to take advantage of any longer.

Laura, I love this.

I am worried about the ongoing race problems in the US, and was especially shocked to see it so close to you and Leo in Charleston.

When it comes to racism, I often get the impression that the American and British contexts are very different. Different histories and different pivotal moments. But what is horribly, awfully, universally consistent is that humans everywhere all too often turn on each other for such (what seem to me as) superficial reasons like skin colour, gender, wealth, employment status, private religious beliefs, etc.

It makes me sad to be a human sometimes.

I am glad that you wrote this. Seeing your perspective makes me feel a bit more informed (though unfortunately, no less helpless).

I am sad to be human most of the time. And this journal entry speaks the words that escape me when I am in the heat of the moment, speaking to one of these deplorable bigots in person. Thank you for writing this Laura. =)
