CBGB's was a really famous music venue ('club') on New York's lower east side. Groups and artists like The Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith and The Talking Heads got their starts there. And people like Andy Warhol and Allen Ginsberg, apparently, used to hang out there a lot. It sort of became a rite of passage for rock and punk bands to go through to play at CBGB's. They quickly instigated a policy that the only way to play CBGB's was to have bands play their own original pieces.
