He picks up and puts down the phone, repeats the action so many times he nearly forgets her number in the process, stopping half-way through dialing it. So. This isn't working. They aren't working, her there and him here and all these oceans and mountains in between them. This is what he has to tell her, he phrases the words in his head, "Sorry, Mi-young, this just isn't working."
It's not her and it's not him, it's the distance between California and Seoul, that's just what it is.
He should travel there to tell it to her face, but he can't afford it, and he knows she can't afford it, already working two jobs to get through college and this is going to be fine, it's better for both of them.
He considers email briefly. No, the least he can do is call. The least.
*
Her voice shakes but she gets the words out before him, that she met somebody, a Chinese-American boy who's really lovely and she didn't do anything but he asked her out and--
And Kibum swallows whatever small heartbreak the knowledge caused him and then pretends to be happy, and then, just a second later, genuinely is happy for her. Mi-young sighs.
"Well, oppa, we had some good times," she says. "I hope you make it through school fine. Let's keep in touch."
"You too," he says.
"Oppa, I sent you a birthday present two weeks ago," she says suddenly. "Did you get it?"
"No, sorry, I haven't gotten it yet," he replies.
"Oh," she says, sounding embarrassed. "Stupid mail. Well, when you do get it, it was.. well, I sent it thinking we'd still be--"
"Together," Kibum finishes. "Don't worry, it's cool. I know it won't mean anything."
They say goodbye, and he puts down the phone. He thinks about the birthday present, how Mi-young usually gave him silly things, soft toys or mobile phone charms. Little things because she couldn't afford anything big, but he appreciated them all the same.
*
A week goes by. His doorbell rings early one morning.
Kibum stumbles out of bed, and yawns his way to the front door, pulling it open wearing only a t-shirt and boxers.
The delivery boy's outfit is too bright in the spring morning sun, and Kibum blinks.
"Kim Kibum?"
"Yes?"
"Delivery for you."
A notepad is stuck out towards him as the delivery boy grins widely, black hair showing under his cap.
"Do I sign here?" Kibum asks but scribbles down his signature before the other can answer, glancing at the delivery information. From the US. Must be Mi-young. "There you go."
"Thank you," the delivery boy says. "Have you ever had a delivery like this before?"
"Sure, all the time," Kibum says and the delivery boy nods his head eagerly.
"Good, then this won't be disturbing for you or anything."
"Why would it be disturb---" Kibum begins just as the delivery boy takes off his baseball cap, moves into Kibum's personal space and kisses him hungrily on the mouth all in one swift movement.
He struggles against the kiss at first, or tries to, his hands rising to push the delivery boy away but instead somehow end up settling on his shoulders. The delivery boy takes a step forward and Kibum nearly falls over, and then doesn't, until they're holding each other and kissing, just kissing for what feels like ages.
The delivery boy pulls away finally and puts his hat back on. "Okay," he says and Kibum's eyes dart to his name tag. Lee Donghae. "Here's your receipt," Lee Donghae says, and Kibum gets a piece of thin paper in his hands as he's still staring at Donghae.
"Um, thanks," Kibum replies, feeling dazed. Did they just do that?
"Happy birthday from Mi-young," Donghae finishes friendly and backs out of Kibum's door. "Sorry the delivery took so long. Cross-Atlantic, you know how it is. Hope it wasn't too late."
"No, it's okay, she told me it'd be late," Kibum says, still dumbfounded.
"That's great," Donghae says with another grin. "I must go now, though, have actual packages to deliver. Have a nice day, sir."
Sir? Kibum blinks. "Er, thanks."
And then Donghae is gone, and Kibum's left with the realization he's going to be late from school soon, and he just made out with a guy because his ex-girlfriend sent him a kiss delivery from the US and he just made out with a guy and he should get some clothes on and he just made out with a guy.
He stares at the receipt in his hand. Happy birthday, oppa~ is typed in the "Special Greeting" box.
Some special greeting it had been, Kibum thinks darkly.
AN: Mi-young is Tiffany from SNSD just because I needed a to-be-ex-gf for Kibum in this. To be continued? Er I make no promises.
