"Isn't it depressing, though? Don't you feel sorry for them? I couldn't do it, day after day, seeing how terrible it was for them. Studying history hurts. It's a wonder we survived it, really ( Read more... )

I like these ladies! It is certainly gratifying to relish in the qualities of friends that we lack in ourselves. And as always, you find an intriguing lens from which to view it all! I hope that we can indeed triumph against ourselves and become but painful footnotes in a better future.

Grasping for the potential triumph, man. That's kinda where I was this week. 😝 But I'm glad the ladies worked for you. Painting them without becoming an expository quagmire was hard, to the extent I succeeded.

I hadn't thought about it this way, but really-- when some part of the world has a cure or solution for something that is causing suffering in another part of the world, the failure to reach across that divide is also a choice. Perhaps more the choice of governments than individuals, but failing to act can be more than an abstraction.

Can we get to the Star Trek nationless ideal already? Or would it require some kind of outside first contact to get us there? I hope not.

I love the way the friends approach history so differently. One looks at the past and is inspired, the other sees only the negative, and is inspired by the current frontiers. This was very thoughtful. Well done, especially with a sore throat!

Thanks! Hot beverage intake is up and I definitely tried to get extra sleep last night. Hopefully I can beat this thing without missing out on too much.

You have such a good ear for sci-fi that looks back from whence it came. Your stories are always little gems that shine! This one is no exception and I love how you merged philosophical pondering with a future knowledge. One wonders why some lessons lend themselves easily to being learned and others simply do not.

I love Kim Stanley Robinson's treatment of the idea of those lessons we just keep having trouble learning in his 2313. It's gotta be the most realistically hopeful treatment of the topic that I've read in a futuristic setting.

I also love your comments! They inspire me to do a better job with my own comments and bring people joy!
