This is great! I'm loving watching the plot thicken like this, and the new perspective and background is perfect. It raises the stakes a lot.

This "as his smile grew and simultaneously became harder to maintain" is a perfect piece of description, I know people who inspire exactly that reaction. So Jim is in major big trouble, interesting.

Oh man, Jim sure did step into some deep shit it seems. It'll be interesting to see if Bryn trusts his account of things. Love this plot thickening!

Good lord. It's a scary day when two different people at an agricultural (?) office have guns, and are ready to use them! This is how Texas usually comes off to those of us who live in other parts of the country. :O

Cooking the numbers on a grant proposal is something that probably happens more often than it should, much like government projects that wind up going ridiculously over-budget. So often the accounting offered up front wasn't solid.

Poor Jim. Now we know that he used to be legit and gainfully employed, and how exactly all of that fell apart.

It was great to get the background information, and you did such a great job writing it. The end was a real surprise, but I guess a gun in a drawer is quicker than one in a shoulder holster.
