After some soul-searching I have made a decision to create my own spin control. It turned out to be much easier than to mold the JSpinner to my requirements. Key solution elements:

• TSpinBox - my own spin control. Implemented as a composite control.

I should create a state diagram for Field state management. FieldModel maintains the state, but InputController has plenty of opportunities to bypass. All should be analyzed and blocked.

It is very important to very precisely design the instance management of Formatters.

• Formatters no longer are stateless processors that perform format and parse functionality. They maintain state for the following reasons:
• Validation requires instance specific values (e.g. integer min/max)
