Expectations....

Students in one freshmen band were being noisy and more talkative than I desired while I was handing back solo and ensemble sheets and reading out choice comments. One student replied, "What do you expect? We're in high school." That comment has rattled in my brain since then

Man. That's awesome. You're a good teacher about stuff like that. I just say things like, "Hey... Why don't you shut your mouth while I am talking?"

Umm... wow. I can tell you the exact response that would have elicited out of me: a written exam the next day.

You should bring up that there are middle school ensembles, even elementary ensembles that can do things without talking. Maybe you should treat them like elementary kids for a day.
