Random thought: It ain't rocket surgery!

Jul 14, 2005 12:46

Why is it that whenever something is easy, we always say, "well, it ain't rocket science!" or "well, it ain't brain surgery!"?

I sense a profound bias toward math and science-related professions as a measuring stick for difficulty; as a liberal arts person, I am offended.

The people who thought up those aphorisms have clearly never read Hegel.

Presumably an essay on Hegel is open to subjective interpretation as to the 'quality' of it, whereas the rocket either goes up to where it's supposed to be or explodes into a million tiny little pieces... sorry that was a bit facetious, perhaps it is because... *sticks finger in mouth* ... math is hard.

I dare you to say: "What's so hard? It ain't Epistemology!" in public and see what kind of reaction you get.

Many people would like the skill, glory and/or money involved in space flight or saving lives.

Comparatively few people care what a dead ugly German guy thinks about thinking.

Maybe a way to incorporate Hengel into contemporary language would be to use it to contrast moslty useless tedious painful things. eg: "Wow, running this steak knife back and forth between my toes doesn't hurt as badly as I thought it would." Could be responded to by saying, "Well, it ain't like readin' Hegel!"
