This past weekend - JoCo and P&S

This past weekend, bozini gave me an early birthday present - tickets to see Jonathan Coulton and Paul and Storm at the Variety Playhouse in Little Five Points. We went to a really odd African restaurant first. I'm not sure I can comment on it.

Paul and Storm started it off with some of their new stuff, including rejected commercial jingles, Opening Band, and The Captain's Wife's Lament. They were consummate showmen, handing out Moon Pies, cracking wise and making mirthful music. The only thing I wished they had done but didn't was their Randy Newman Theme Songs for various movies.

Then JoCo took the stage, and everything changed. He started out with "Future Soon", which is one of my abso-faves, then ran down the list of songs I love. Then Paul and Storm joined him, and it was a comedy cavalcade. At one point, it devolved into a contest to see who could come up with the most crappy soft rock songs that fit the chords for "Soft Rocked by Me" - which culminated in "Blue Bayou". The encore was "Re: Your Brains" and "Sweet Caroline", with the audience doing the trumpet parts (ba-dap-pap-paaaaah!).

On top of it all, bozini got me all of P&S's cds and got them autographed for me. I hate doing that sort of stuff - I never know what to say and feel awkward, so I don't talk to the people I admire.

When we got home, the kids were passed out on the couch. All in all, a perfect night.
