New York Trip - Day 6 and farewell

Dec 06, 2008 11:37

Here we go again, on my own (with the boy). Our last full day in NYC and a fond farewell (or will it be au revoir? I hope so.).

Miguel and I got a late start to the day, sleeping in a bit and dawdling in getting dressed. We were not looking forward to another day out in the cold, but today was one I had been looking forward to. We got dressed and hit Junior's for an early lunch. Miguel had a burger and hot chocolate, I had a great Reuben and a chocolate egg cream:

Thus fortified, we then went out onto the frigid, 32-degree-Fahrenheit street where the Naked Cowboy was playing:

We headed down a couple of blocks to Bryant Park, where fashion shows are held in the spring. This was winter, though, so they were having a craft fair. In Atlanta when there's a craft fair in the park, the vendors bring a tent and set it up, making the park look like a gypsy camp. In New York, apparently, the park sets up identical wrought iron and glass huts for people to sell out of - it took me a while to realize that they weren't permanent structures. It was a beautiful park:

Miguel wandered, watched a magic show and rode a charming carousel:

All of this was prelude for the main purpose of visiting this venue, which was to go to the New York Public Library.

The lions out front are called Patience and Fortitude. Some kind soul had knitted a tail cozy for Patience:

Every bit of this building is embellished and decorated, from the doorknob and the entrance:

to the water fountains:

Every little detail caught my eye:

Nowhere of course was more ornate than the McNally Rotunda (of which, if you watched the Sex and the City movie, you've seen much better imagery):

We wandered for a while, snapping pics and marveling at the exhibitions. After a while, Miguel tired of this bibliophilia, so we split back to the hotel (via the Chrysler building):

(Did you know the chrome gargoyles that flank the Chrysler building are made from engine parts? I had no idea.)

That evening we saw Mary Poppins. I found it somewhat disappointing - it felt stilted, overdirected and overproduced. The actors did well enough, the singing was good, the costumes and set were phenomenal, but it didn't hang together, you know? This is the only show I saw that I would not recommend.

Anyway. The next morning saw us winging our way back to Atlanta. We woke early, had a final Junior's breakfast, and caught a cab to Laguardia. One final picture of the city over my shoulder in the taxi:

À bientôt New York! Stay well until we meet again!
