Anyone else would have been wise to knock on Rentia's door before sailing into the office without so much as a by your leave, particularly when the woman downstairs had mentioned others, indicating some sort of meeting, but Istrel trusted to who she was to protect her from any backlash from Rentia. That, and the simple element of surprise. Having a Ghost at her back just might help with that last bit. She pushed open the door and stepped into Rentia's office quickly, waited for Skailari to follow her, and then closed the door behind them both.
It helped that this time no one drew any weapons or moved to attack either Istrel or Skailari. Certainly that was encouraging, although she was not exactly welcomed - each of the four people in the room were watching her and Skailari with some degree of shock and anger, and Rentia, behind her desk, perhaps the angriest of them, lips pressed tightly together, eyebrows raised in an appraising, questioning, and altogether very upset look.
"Istrel. It seems to me a bit early for you to pay a visit. And with a... friend," she said slowly, her eyes on Skailari the whole time though it was Istrel she addressed.
"It seems an odd hour for half the guild to be sitting in the front room," Istrel countered boldly. She took her eyes off Rentia long enough to consider the other three in the room - each of them someone she knew well, each of them those most closely associated with the guild's less legal activities. Her concern immediately doubled. "What's happening?"
Rentia did not respond immediately, eying Istrel with... reproach? Caution? The fact that she had not yet asked about Skailari impressed Istrel somewhat, but also worried her, if there were something more pressing than a Ghost right there in the guild house. "What made you come here if you didn't know?"
Somehow Istrel suppressed the compulsion to snap, Don't know WHAT?, reined in her temper and said evenly, "I wanted you to set up a meeting with Siaph for me. It's urgent, which is why I didn't want until dawn." Well, that and the fact that traveling with a Ghost would be difficult after dawn, with the world to see.
Faces fell, or went blank. Istrel noticed the woman sitting nearest her bite her lip and look down. What -
Rentia spoke before a question could even fully form in Istrel's mind, let alone be said aloud. "Istrel... that is the reason for this. Siaph -"
"What?"
"-was executed by the other mages. Publicly, last night, in Darpur's Square."
