Timeline

The front door was unlocked when she tried it, and that gave her pause. She hadn't been so rushed when she left that she'd forgotten to lock it, had she? More, she found the lamps in the front room were lit when she pushed open the door and stepped inside, and she was certain she had blown them out before leaving. Skailari stepped inside behind her and pulled back the hood, away from its face. Istrel hurried to close the door before someone outside saw, murmuring as she did, "I think there's someone here." Except, why would an intruder light the lamps, or...?

Skailari gave her a flat look, not in the least concerned or even faintly curious as it had been earlier with Minri. "There is."

"What-"

"Istrel!" Kaytam bounded down the hallway into the room to hug her, and kiss her lightly. "Where've you been all day?" All tension drained from Istrel immediately. Of course it was Kaytam, she had just been thinking all day on conspiracy and threats and her mind automatically leapt to danger instead of the more sensible reasoning... She shoved such thoughts to the back of her mind and embraced her friend.

"I was at the guild house. What are you doing here?"

Kaytam gave her a reproving look with a bit of a pout, head tilted at an angle that made her chin-length brown hiar fall over her face. Istrel was fairly certain she hadn't the faintest idea just how pretty she was when she did that. "You said I could come over. And you've been gone all day long. What were you doing at the guild house?"

Istrel was slightly relieved that Skailari was the only one to hear Kaytam scolding her. Anyone else, any of her friends, would have mocked her mercilessly for allowing herself to be so effectively cornered by the sweet, gentle dancer. On the other hand, she couldn't tell Kaytam the truth. "It was just... guild business. Nothing important."

Kaytam took a step back from Istrel and turned, inexplicably, to the Ghost standing off to the side. "Skailari?"

And before Istrel could demand why Kaytam was even speaking to the Ghost, much less asking it questions that were none of her business, it answered. "Her mage died. An execution."

"Skailari," Istrel growled, the implication clear - stop talking. The Ghost ignored her.

"Probably for treason, and probably they will want Istrel next."

Kaytam looked to Istrel, wide-eyed, for confirmation. Istrel glowered at Skailari, tempted aginst all common sense to try to strangle it. Skailari appeared oblivious, both to Kaytam's alarm and Istrel's anger, and after a second or two Istrel gave up glaring, seeing that it had no effect.
