Cheap solar-powered calculators are a dime a dozen (well, actually about $15 for a dozen). Cheap digital countdown timers are also easy to find. But cheap solar-powered timers? As far as I can tell they do not exist, even though they seem like a really obvious product.

I don't think they're as obvious as all that. A solar-powered timer would need to have a backup (presumably rechargeable) battery. Consider why solar-powered calculators work so well: There is no circumstance under which you are going to use a calculator when you can't see it. A timer, though, you might well want to set, then leave alone in a dark room until it goes off. If it didn't have a backup battery, that wouldn't work so well.

I'm not talking about a timer which could be used to control anything, or as an alarm clock substitute - just something you can set to a maximum of, say, 5 minutes and then let count down. I've bought ones like that for as little as $1, but they need batteries.
