My totally un PC view.

Maybe Kevin Smith should consider his seatmates while ranting about being told he could not fly without purchasing two seats. I totally understand that the man was humiliated for being basically kicked off a Southwest flight when he was deemed too heavy to only have one seat.  I also understand the anger that must come with it. And the fact that ( Read more... )

Glad you brought this up because I've been listening to his side of it, and he tells quite a different story. So does a passenger two seats over from him, who had no idea he was famous at the time. Kevin Smith in fact HAD purchased two seats this time, and not because he doesn't like sitting next to people. Initially, his wife was scheduled to accompany him. She was unable to, but he still paid for both, leaving the seat next to him open. He was seated with both armrests down and his belt fastened. This is important because SW says they booted him because the armrests wouldn't go down and the belt wouldn't fit. This is confirmed by the other passenger. So NO ONE had to sit next to him and he wasn't spilling out of the seat. This is where it gets interesting. The girl who was sitting at the other end of the 3-seat row was also overweight and was asked to purchase a second ticket and also to move. That's not what the story I read stated. But I don't watch the news, so I likely missed follow-ups. Sorry. I still feel the same way, though. Even if you can get the arm-rests down, if there isn't an extra seat purchased it can be pure misery for the seatmates. Saying that may brand me as someone who is discriminatory. So be it. It does sound like Southwest wasn't being fair if he had two seats.

I have to add that I also agree with some airlines having separate sections for those with children. Especially since parents can't seem to control their kids.

Even if you did watch the news, I doubt you'd have heard this side of the story. I subscribe to a free podcast in which Kevin Smith regularly speaks directly to whomever would like to listen. The media seems too eager to jump to making fat jokes rather than listening to what he has to say. Also, the young woman involved has been ignored by the media. If Kevin Smith weren't Kevin Smith, I doubt any of us would have heard of this at all ( ... )
