There is a turtle crossing sign on the road to my new home in Domino. I've pondered the oddity of this for some days now and have yet to come to a conclusion as to why we need a turtle crossing sign.
The picture on the sign is clearly that of a turtle, as if one might miss the fact that the animal crossing the road is indeed a turtle because it's going so fast that we can't identify it properly and so need to check the sign.
They are indeed the opposite and very slow, but I cannot see it being a huge hazard to drivers. Also, from the other side of things, if a wee turtle did happen to be hit by a car, what's the very worst that could happen? They do have shells for natural protection. And if you were to hit a turtle, and all the delicious pecans and caramel were to squish out, wouldn't that be something people may aim for rather than avoid?
Is the turtle crossing sign therefore to alert us to the possibility of turtles so that we may target them more effectively with our vehicles? I for one am always on the look out for a new source of caramel and chocolatey goodness.
And what about the date on the sign, it states turtle crossing, from april to june. Does it really take that long for a turtle to cross the road? And who stood there long enough to find this fact out? I mean I'm certain the turtle is grateful that the person put up a sign to warn motorists about it's slow crossing so it won't loose all it's delicious pecans and caramel filling, but wouldn't it be nicer if the person had simply picked the turtle up and put it three months ahead of time on the other side of the road?
I'm not going to say anything against the poor wee turtles for choosing to cross the road in the first place. Certainly I have nothing bad to say about them. I hear some of them are ninjas after all and I don't need a ninja star in my forehead.
But in conclusion, there are turtles, and they are crossing roads, and they are doing it near my new home. I think I shall have to go and sit out by the sign one day to see if I can spot any, the novelty simply must be seen to be believed. Especially since it's such spectacular a happening that there's even a sign!
